The incentives are all wrong. Tests are money spinners, so hospitals and clinics push them hard. Over-testing is usually associated with worse health outcomes. For example, nearly anyone who gets a full body scan has a few suspicious looking blobs. It's almost always nothing, but it results in unnecessary treatment or exploratory surgery while not actually saving many lives.

It's so heartbreaking to see people who are very sick or even dying have to stress about bills. It's just not something a moral society does. It's not just mental, cortisol really knocks down your immune system.

To me it's an argument that there isn't enough democracy. Brexit would never had happened if the British political class (including Labour and libdems) were not totally hostile to the interests of the British working class over a period of several decades. When a government isn't responsive to the people, bad stuff happens.

How do you know it does? The pro-surveillence side needs to put forth positive evidence. The precautionary principle is the only just, non-authoritarian option for situations like this. I know the targets are mostly in neighborhoods that you probably don't frequent, but those people have the same rights you do, and that includes the right to reasonable privacy.

To add to other user's comments, linear types are useful for reasoning exactly about (some) imperative constructs, which is really, really hard to do with standard type systems. That's why reliably guaranteeing e.g. why it's still difficult to ensure safe and timely disposal of database connections in Haskell (maybe not now) or Scala, despite their powerful type systems.

There's many other such modal type systems/logics used for other special purposes like temporal logic.

Med school requires good analytical smarts and an excellent ability to retain information, but I'm quite convinced at this point that raw analyical ability has almost nothing to do with the ability to think critically to avoid insane beliefs. It's just not something that humans come built-in with.

To be fair, in the specific case of tomatoes, the more it's cooked/reduced, the more bioavailable many of its nutrients are. Tomato paste is just tomatoes. Usually these kinds of pizzas have tons of sugar in the sauce, though.

As you say, it is completely predictable that beverage companies would adapt to a Pareto-like distribution of consumption. However, unlike for things like books or outdoor equipment, adapting to a Pareto distribution here means that a company is intentionally profiting from addiction. This is an absolutely huge negative externality in terms of the social , health, and economic harm that alcohol addiction causes.

The US only protects property rights of some. Read up on asset forfeitures in the US. Police can seize cash on you with only "reasonable suspicion" with no conviction required.

It seems like these feel-good stories about benevolent capitalists get a little less traction now, although perhaps not in forums populated by the labor aristocracy.
