You might be amazed to know how critical Services are to functioning Apple devices. While they mostly can run offline, there are dozens and dozens of services that Apple runs that modern ecosystems require (like certificate related stuff). Other oddball things related to iCloud, APNS and the private services like iCloud relay are all extremely critical to billions of devices. Thankfully the all mostly fail open (captive portal is particularly tricky). Not saying they are as critical or visible as, say, Google.com going down, but none the less would have a very very large and visible problem if they all did go down suddenly. Thankfully, due to Apple design philosophy, most are totally decentralized and teams are given almost complete autonomy on how services are ran, which makes them a huge confusing mess but also, kind of a feature as Apple generally expects them all to fail in odd ways and the software can generally handle it.

The arid and sunny west ware prime candidates for solar, yet the current administration is doing everything they can to further destroy any chance a future of being carbon neutral with cancellations of many projects.

This game was one of my favorites! I recently moved to a Debian / GeForce / Intel setup and could not be happier with how Steam proton has been working out of the box. I’ve been able to run the windows version of Caesar III with proton enabled flawlessly. The distributed version has some really awful default graphics, so I ran the c3respatcher [1] in wine which also worked flawlessly. Linux gaming has come a long way.

What’s the solution here?

We need to stop building houses out of wood. Every wood structure in Southern California has known termites or has them and it just isn’t known. It’s not just the foundations of structures either, drywood termites swarm yearly and cause just as much damage as any subterranean termites.

Personally, I’d rather not be treating my home with the termite fumigation chems unless I have to and have been diligent at creating a defensive barrier (6 inches) around my home and keep a tight watch over the entire structure all year. During the summer, when the drywood termites swarm, I pickup thousands in my pool and remain extra diligent.

I’d much rather just have most of the structure be adobe some other cementitious material than play a losing game of three little piggies every so many years.

The internet is a decentralized collection of autonomous systems (AS) and the primary benefit of this setup isn’t exactly realized afaict, which is multiple paths via different carriers. Your BGP AS is advertised via N paths, so your IP networks are thus reachable via multiple paths. Systems will take the shortest/best path adding to redundancy and throughput. Compared that to “business” service without routing options, when your “dedicated” connection drops, your IP addresses are no longer reachable from the greater internet.

There is a saying in Ireland called "More Irish than the Irish" and refers to immigrants and non-locals who take up all of the local culture to extreme (compared to the average) levels.

Immigrants are statistically the most law abiding and often times, even conservative, members of a a community and it probably is one measure of long-term survival (esp. in the U.S. while living under the microscope of a work visa) so they need to go to great lengths to fit in and avoid even the appearance of impropriety - something the natives (and in all likelihood their children, if raised there) would take for granted. I recall visiting a Apple store around 2006 and playing with a store model iMac. I asked why I couldn’t easily maximize windows and manage them. The Apple genius just replied “why would you ever want to do it that way!”
