What kind of employment do you expect to have handed to you with a 2-year mathematics degree?
Perhaps if you stayed in school longer or got a degree in something less useless?
The guy in that video you linked has the douchiest face I have ever seen.
It's clear the comment you're responding to bothered you a lot because your thinly-veiled compliments do nothing but reveal your insecurities.
The guy you are responding to is correct - this is more a story of a lazy person taking advantage of a system than it is about "searching for passion".
As opposed to what? Being another entrepreneur, bootstrapping genius raking in million dollar exits? Are those the only viable life paths these days?
Reading this, it looks like your app was a house of cards because that's exactly how you designed and built it. It was only when it started to hurt your productivity did you realize the mistake.
Honestly, who thought it would be a good idea to have a UI element that appears many times in a single page be responsible for fetching its own data?
This guy is a senior engineer but has never heard of higher-order components or the container pattern? Smells fishy...
Why are threads like this allowed on HN?
Surely joke threads like this, intending to rip-off and poke fun at "Who's Hiring" threads are against HN guidelines, no?
Does the community actually find these threads useful or are they mainly a way for people to collect upboats?
30 years experience web dev here, probably much more successful than the author and everyone else in this thread.
Fully agree with the author here. 10/10
Truth be told, I'm not that big of a reader.
which appeals to me
I think I can tell exactly what kind of person you are...
I've turned down many $100 million offers for my side project startup. I've even turned down a few billion dollar offers. I'm holding out for $100 billion for my side project startup. I'm a student entrepreneur.
Personally, I try to remain in the 120% range at all times and NEVER dip below 110%. In my experience, just settling at a 100% output level is a great way to get identified as a slacker. As a manager, I've cut many 100%s.
Does "entrepreneur" really just mean relentlessly pursuing riches?
Every person I've met that describes themselves as an entrepreneur is only interested in their own personal wealth, but they always seem to have some bizarre, self-serving narrative about "disrupting" their industry.
Aren't "student entrepreneurs" just young, greedy people who have decided they want to be rich, they just aren't exactly sure where they're gonna get the money yet?
Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I don't believe these mentalities should be encouraged. They are toxic.
I'm surprised when people say Keccak is the best but they've never heard of BLAKE2.
I think this is where you belong: www.reddit.com/r/iamverysmary
Is "back to front" how Brits say "backwards"?
The West Coast of the US is objectively the greatest area for human beings to live on the planet. As someone who lives here, I believe that everyone born here is (or should be) extremely thankful for it, and anyone who isn't born here will likely spend their entire lives figuring out how to get here. :)
Glad to see you already understand this. :)
People like you who throw the word "addict" around willy-nilly like that have no idea what addiction truly means.
You got sick once and now you march around proclaiming "I was an addict", despite the opinions of nearly every medical professional you've discussed it with?
Get over yourself, man. You aren't as important as you clearly think you are...
I don't mean to diminish your experience... but "pure unadulterated hell" is having a SO that loves you, a stable place to live, sleep, and eat, as well as a stable career?
If all of that is what "pure, unadulterated hell" looks like to you, I think your life really hasn't been as difficult and full of "hardships" as you would have people believe...
I think the thing that would help you most would be to stop feeling like a victim. That's what helped me! Best of luck to you.
You're asking for an example of something that is worth more to a purchaser than they paid for it?
I would pay for a monthly subscription for any teenager's monthly mailed "box" service. I currently subscribe to over 3 dozen such services. It's sort of an addiction...
Anyway, if you are a young entrepreneur building a site that offers a monthly subscription for something, I will almost certainly be interested.
Please PM me when you product is done. I would love to be your first subscriber!
I agree. Defrauding investors isn't a "woops" sort of mistake.
They deliberately lied about what they had and sought to exploit the misconceptions their company perpetrated for personal gain.
If people who do this aren't sent to jail, isn't the system encouraging more people to try stuff like this?
I thought these types of comments weren't allowed on Hacker News? I'm curious why a mod hasn't detached this comment yet.
What is the point of threads like this? Is the OP trying to be witty or humorous?
I don't believe these threads contribute to any discussions on this website. They are deliberately created as a joke.
I'll post my personal experiences with this software - it was not enjoyable and I felt it was mostly a waste of time. I didn't feel like it effectively conveyed the idea and purpose of the lessons it was trying to give. Ultimately, it was kind of a waste of time...
I had a lot more success and a lot more enjoyment with OpenAI Gym. If codingame is interesting to you, definitely save yourself some time and check out OpenAI Gym!
I've spent more than I am willing to admit on Dota 2 skins....
Your friend should be able to easily learn everything he would need to know to land a software eng job in no longer than 1 month by reading online tutorials.
I have watched several of my friends go from absolutely 0 knowledge to senior software engineers in less than 6 months. Being a software engineer is incredibly easy and requires no innate talent.
You have a really poor attitude. I think you will never have big money. You will never have job satisfaction. You will never be successful.
Good luck! Thank you for your comment. This thread has created valuable discussion.
Should I create artificial challenge and try to get into MIT/Stanford for masters?
Yes, this is your best approach. Getting a Masters from MIT or Stanford will be the only way for you to find further satisfaction in your career. Good luck!
Exactly! Thank you! Some people are in a situation where they literally have no choice but to rely on their employer for almost everything in their lives. This can be especially true for people of color because of the endless social injustices they are forced to endure.
Thank you for your comment.
I believe that being rich is more important than being a dispassionate truthseeker.
You seem like a really intelligent and capable person. I wish you luck in your search for a dev job!
