I'll be presenting KidsAbacus.com at SuperConf and will be getting to Miami on the 23rd, so I'll try to make it to this meetup on Wednesday. If not I'll see you at the event.

Thanks rbreve ... if anyone here checks kidsabacus.com out let me know what you think. Will be presenting it at SuperConf in Miami in a few weeks, your comments can help me out with the pitch.
Agree. And the articles refers to other emerging tech entrpreneurship hubs (secondary markets) that make it possible to start a company and take advantage of the established ecosystems.
If you are not in a city where such ecosystem exists, you could probably start building a prototype there but as soon as you need to scale up (financially, hiring, or other) you will probably need to start networking or moving a city that has one.
In the 90s with QBASIC ... then Turbo Pascal ... etc
I don't think he is saying that shipping a product will prevent others from copying... what he's saying is that shipping is the cure to overcome the fear of having others copying your idea.
Once you ship, it doesn't matter if others want to copy you, because you are already out there... there is nothing else to fear. It's your chance to execute faster and better than the others who were already there and the ones that join in (new competitors).
You should explain what the product does (or will do) so I have an incentive to be on your mailing list.
