How is this about "shorts"? I thought the "longs" were all about long term thinking? Why do they claim victory after one decent quarter?

Do you realize stock price is still well below the highs? How are the shareholders winners here?

just like we should be outraged by websites that sell your data without your explicit consent.

At least some of the onus is on you to be more discriminate with whom you share your data. As the sibling says, assume the worst.

It's fun to expound about "how things should be" but sometimes you have to deal with "how things actually are".

Blood money 8 years ago

If you had an offer from Slack, would you seriously turn it down because they have Saudi money via Softbank if it was otherwise your top choice?

Of course not. The Valley runs on greed.

Yeah, sounds like those employees should definitely pay the price for something they had nothing to do with.

Oh, it's grand to read these sorts of comments from one of the most righteous communities now that the scandal is in their backyard.

Yeah, who cares if the guy signing your paycheck is hiring death squads to murder journalists! My photo app deserves to sell for millions!

But with the Silicon Valley crowd

Yep, the SV crowd thinks they're the enlightened ones, saving the planet. Between billion dollar valuations based on blood-money, the massive financial inequality and the state surveillance apparatus they built to put us in, I doubt the proletariat think too fondly of the place.

SA is a godsend to any entrepreneur who has an idea that is viewed as high risk based on traditional VC investors. If SA pulls out of being so proactive with their investments then it will be a huge wake up call to many early stage startups for sure.

This implies that "traditional" VC couldn't get high risk stuff funded, but SA can. That has no basis in history or reality.

With Softbank playing such a big role I wonder if there is some component of incumbents playing this up to try to curb the influence of Softbank ?

Playing what up? The fact that Silicon Valley and their new "hey, just stay private!" mentality was heavily funded by blood/oil money?

Is this actually news to people that Saudi Arabia has done terrible things? Or does it only matter now that there's been a scandal?

Well, thank God for the scandal, then.

Median takes away the bias of the extremes that averages can include.

What sort of extremes do you expect to see in age data for starting a business?

There will be no 10 years olds, and likely no 90 years olds.

But in this "research", there are far more data to unpack.

Why the quotations? Do you not believe this is research? This is a 1000 word summary of their work; do you think these researchers, from some of the best schools on the planet, didn't consider the sorts of questions you pose?

As someone who has read pretty much every single applied ML and theoretical ML book out there

Would you mind recommending a couple of your favorites in both the theoretical and applied?

Good, then take the gender politics chat back to reddit where it belongs.

How about taking your superiority complex elsewhere? I'm willing to bet that 90% of the HN audience uses reddit in some capacity.

Would it shock you to learn that there are other communities on the internet that have great discussion? Some even make fun of HackerNews for the misperception that the discourse here is superior.

He did not win the Nobel Prize in Economics because there is no such prize.

Hey look, it's the guy who shows up every year to point out a technicality that no one cares about. Thanks!

This is so common now it's an SMBC meme.

I'm around 150

Good old HN: 1 out of 200 people in the population have an IQ of 140+, but half the people in this thread do.

Can't wait for the ironic "But HackerNews is filled with such smart people!" comments.

Just like there is a youtube generation (grew up on youtube) there is a reddit generation in the works.

I'm not sure "in the works" is correct.

Although they were founded around the same time, reddit is older as a social media platform than YouTube. I'd say the reddit demographic is those around ~30 years old, give or take a few years. I don't think young people/teenagers use it as a "go to" (like I do).

All this is to say, I'm not sure if there's a growth story here. My bet would be on stagnation.
