I don't know if this was IT shrugging me off or if it was something real but some IT person at this big ISP I worked at told me that they cannot just buy an SSD — my windows box at work was running off of a hard disk in 2019 — and that there was some contract that said any computer hardware we bought had to be through HP or something like that and it takes many months it something like that.

Without WhatsApp support it will not go far.

Edit: Requiring Google Play login to use this express chat app is pretty stupid in my opinion. Why do apps require Google Play login? Especially a Chinese app? I am on an Android phone with Google play. I am just not signed in to Google play. I installed this app with Aurora store. The app simply throws me back to Play Store which tells me to sign in. Why?

I am doing this now. I have had a carrier locked iPhone SE 2020 which I only use on Wi-Fi for over five years now. I also have an android phone and I don't install any banking apps on my android phone.

mskes me wonder... Could Apple do this? Like imagine only for iMessage platform but just like find my... For short text messages like let's say under 500 characters plain text or something obscenely tiny allow people to hop on other people's data or network access to peer to peer deliver messages over iMessage like we do with find my. Would be a great idea to think about in case of natural disasters? Maybe limit both clientside as well as server side to something like only ten or twenty outstanding messages per apple id at any time to cut down spam? Right and this becomes even more powerful when you add in Apple's satellite message service. So if a device can't reach the sky but is in reach of a passing person maybe we can get the message. It isn't panacea by any means especially with the rate limits but Apple is in this unique position to do something good if it wanted to. Ten is more than zero and people can forward message like I am alive and in so and so is worth more than a thousand mindless Instagram reel forwards. And maybe some day we can have this as a "global" standard but until then Tim Cook says "buy your mom an iPhone"

Maybe it works for small stuff like running out of bolts in a production line but not something high level like the owner is an idiot and made a massive mistake. I sometimes think about the high profile Amazon Fire Phone and why nobody involved in building the Amazon fire phone say at any point that this thing was destined to fail. I'm sure Amazon dot com had highly intelligent workers and managers who saw what was coming but never spoke up.

I have never ever heard from any Amazon employee I've met in person tell me of any instance where they told their manager or supervisor something and had the superior "disagree and commit". It always goes in one direction, down unlike what they say in their HR material.

I don't think this is a solved problem at all, short of making it very inexpensive to pull that proverbial cord as a worker AND making it very expensive to ignore such cord pulling as management. I don't know if it is possible to have that with our management system today. These two properties — cheap to pull and expensive to ignore — are intertwined. It means management giving up a lot, perhaps almost all, of its power to the workers. If you follow through with this, you also need to share more information because if the workers are actually empowered to decide, they should have the information necessary to make such decisions.

It requires someone with power to consistently and deliberately eschew this power which isn't sustainable because at some point in the management chain you will come across someone who will not.

Even at Toyota, I don't think you can pull the Andon cord on hydrogen fuel cell to switch to electric vehicles because at this point you are not just up against management, you are up against national energy policy.

It is difficult for me to admit I'm an idiot but when I was younger and living in an apartment, I loved the idea of a single family home. And now that I'm living in a single family home, I feel like I was wrong all along. Not that I want to go back to the apartment I was in before. Dear lord no but the idea of a mixed use building not too tall only like first floor with high ceilings for business or shops with two or at the most three floors above for residential units feels like the ideal sweet spot. Ideally with a lot of these close together to have everything I need within a walking distance but also a subway station within a walking distance if I need to go farther.

I work with dotnet but my understanding is that some applications/ teams are still on java 8 with spring boot or whatever so it isn't like they aren't modernizing but they are choosing to do so at their own time which is fine I think

I tried uploading a git repository that I have previously successfully published on Github pages. This is a "no build" website I have built with the help of Claude. I sincerely believe that a better idea in my opinion is to eliminate all means testing in government benefits altogether. No, higher taxes is not means testing. They are not the same thing at all. Removing means testing means we want the service to be used by all, which means the service should be at least usable by people who have the option to use something else. On a similar note, medicare clawback rules are cruel and unusual punishment. To punish the stupid and ill prepared while rewarding those who did tax planning five years or more before retirement is cruel.

Extra taxes on the stupid should be illegal.

If you don't fight data centers, data centers won't seek solution oriented ways to lower their footprint. You are really saying that you can't fight data center demand. And that is true, but you can restrain their supply, increase their cost, and optimize on low impact approaches.

Not that this is an apples to apples comparison but imagine people saying that about nuclear reactors. Yes, we want them to be as safe as possible and as efficient as possible but that doesn't mean we don't build it. And at the risk of being a NIMBY, AI data centers don't have to be located right next to my house. Unlike regular data centers, these can and should be in the frigid cold. That would probably be for the best anyway. All it needs is redundant fiber network connection, right? Also we should probably require all AI data centers to use renewable energy only. All these are doable but the fight against AI data centers has to be practical and solutions oriented, not fighting it for the sake of fighting it.

The goal should be a single payer health care system. I am not asking for like luxury spa five star treatment. However, there definitely should be a "free of cost at the point of service" option that does not have any means testing of any kind.

Anecdotally speaking, I have seen a change in behavior even from early 2024. I was in a meeting (online) with a few people from Google shortly before Google IO about something fairly small. The technical engineer actually spoke(!) and he talked about revenue and stuff. I was dumbfounded that technical engineers at Google would ever care about "moving the needle".

High graduation rates are an important metric to administrators. If a professor gave a failing grade to 1/3 of the class they would be in hot water.

I remember practically every single instructor/professor on the first day of class during my freshman year of my undergraduate study said something along the lines of "I have no curves. Your grades depend on you and nobody else. If the whole class does well, everyone can get an A. If nobody does well, everybody can fail."

At some point last year I tried to get Claude free tier or something like that to write me a minimal bootable operating system kernel that would boot inside libvirt.

I didn't try very hard or I wasn't very good at writing the prompt or Claude was not very good but the end result was it didn't work.

A senior developer on my team has an attitude about this AI stuff that I wish I could have or at least feign — it feels like he is genuinely positively surprised and happy every single time it gets anything right. And he quietly fixed stuff when it gets it wrong.

That 38-minute core was deliberately minimal, and it is worth being precise about its scope. It booted and passed its in-kernel self-tests, and that was the whole of it.
