I love the precision of this. I have one daughter who must avoid dairy and egg so we’ve experimented with various substitutes. The “creamy” oat milk works well. For eggs, we’ve found bob’s red mill egg replacer to work great with almost no discernible taste difference. The trick is mixing it with water in a separate little bowl and waiting 2-3 minutes. Too long and it gets overly gelatinous and won’t mix in well but too little waiting makes it too watery and you’ll get flat pancakes.

I think that also depends on the story. You saw far different reporting on Covid from the two sources. Some of the stuff coming out of the right was crazy but some ended up being the truth and the left leaning sources clearly had their marching orders dialed in and even cast things that were eventually proven true to be “lies” at the time.

I’m with you. As someone with the opposite political view of the majority around me, I’m in constant fear of disagreeing with the status quo messaging. In a glass-half-full way it has helped me build my Socratic method muscles in these situations.

I find that changing the right click to the bottom right corner works well for me. I constantly have two fingers resting on the trackpad. Other replies have commented about using the thumb to click while you drag with another finger. I do that constantly so I just gave up on the two finger right click. It would trigger all the time when I didn’t want it to.

What exactly do you think wealthy people do with their money? Buy a big vault and swim around in it like Scrooge McDuck? They invest in new businesses, donate to charities. Heck, Bill Gates’ foundation is curing malaria in Africa. What makes you think the government getting the money is going to be more effective? I think it will largely just swell the bureaucracy and lead to more waste, not less.

Yet you think government corruption wouldn’t become an equal (or worse) problem?

One thing I have not heard discussed is the all-too-common family visit. If I drive 200 miles to visit some family and stay at their house what’s the etiquette for using their power to charge my car? I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking and saying “I’ve got to leave for two hours to find a charging station” also feels awkward. I want to maximize our time together and not burden folks with needing to pay to charge my car.

I suppose you’re talking about abortion rights, not the right to vote. Making a pretty sweeping claim about an entire state there…

I would argue that “investing in your kids” is a middle class point of view. If you’re upper middle class or upper class you have nannies and au pairs helping you raise your children. Your relationship with your children has much more of an air of convenience than a middle class family.

In fact I would expect renovation to accelerate because of high rates. Anecdotally many of our friends are much more interested in renovating the home they’re in rather than give up a low mortgage rate in exchange for a higher one on a more expensive home.

I don’t know about you but other than me, no one in my house used substantial internet bandwidth. Netflix and YouTube mostly. If I throttled the house to 50mbps no one would notice.

I’ve got a special place in my heart for Ruby and rails and the scaling argument always kills me. If you’re a small app, why solve a problem you don’t have? It’s not cool to write Ruby apps anymore, that’s why. Most problems people face are architectural problems, not language problems, and even if you do hit them, it’s probably a pretty damn small slice of your app you have to optimize.

I worked for a company that did 5k bonuses and I snagged it once for a referral. The next company had a similar bonus but when I sent someone in and applied for the bonus I was told management didn’t qualify as lead referral was “part of our job”. I’m over it…I promise ;)

This almost felt inevitable. Throw together a bunch of folks who are focused on “researching” anti-racism, and overly sensitive to any transgression they can find, and you get a very toxic place to work. Not surprising unfortunately.
