It's worth noting that in the US there is already the DMCA that content creators can use to take down their work.

Most content owners even big companies like Disney choose to allow (or maybe just ignore) the memes and likenesses because it's free advertising. So in a way they are getting value.

"The indictment further alleges that Holmes and Balwani knew that many of their representations about the analyzer were false. For example, allegedly, Holmes and Balwani knew that the analyzer, in truth, had accuracy and reliability problems, performed a limited number of tests, was slower than some competing devices, and, in some respects, could not compete with existing, more conventional machines."

From the article:

"But, more crucial, it’s also an expression of techno-fundamentalism, the unshakable belief that one can and must invent the next technology to fix the problem caused by the last technology. Techno-fundamentalism is what has landed us in this trouble. And it’s the wrong way to get us out."

Platforms like Facebook are just exposing these innate human biases that have existed since the birth of our species.

The congressional hearings showed that even for some really smart people it's hard to understand the annals of technology and the broader dynamics.

In my view Mr. Zuckerberg's points on AI were more about identifying bots, and bad actor campaigns and not focused on censorship of individual ideas.

The issue I've run into with the docks is that I have to remove my case to use them.

Nice! Agreed that this is an area that could use some tech.

Looking forward to a Show HN or something similar for this one.

How does one feed in the list of attendees? Will it work with Avery-labels and multiple printers?

I've some hearing loss and ringing from frequent skydiving, tunnel flying, and too much loud music. It's very loud in the plane and in free fall.

After trying lots of different ear protection methods (mostly ear plugs but also some head phones), I've settled on these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00REAQTF4/ref=oh_aui_sear...

They're simple, filter high dB sound but you can still hear people speak.

See a doctor for further advice and treatment. Once you damage your hearing it could be too late to recover.

Indeed. Iron and other heavy elements sink into the core of planets as they're being formed. This leaves less iron on the surface for chemical reactions that might lead to life.

However, iron does play an important role in life as we know it, even today. Earth's molten and rotating iron and nickle core is what creates our magnetosphere that shields us--and presumably early life--from deadly solar radiation.

I said it above (in my long post), but this is powerful:

"I'm not thinking about this again until such and such day or time."

If you can master it, you'll feel the weight lift off your shoulders almost immediately. The same is true for work, "I'll only work on this during these three hours and then I'm done until tomorrow at 10 AM" or whatever.

Also, burnout after a lot of work is normal. It happens to all of us. Relax, take some time off, do what you love and you'll come back even stronger and more determined than before!

It sounds like your body and mind need a rest. IDK about you, but even though I'm healthy and in pretty good shape for my age, my legs, glutes, lower back, shoulders, etc. get really tight from sitting all day and into the night (I work similar amounts and have for years).

I have a couple of techniques that work for me.

- Taking breaks. Sometimes it's reading HN, other times it's preparing a small meal, or just walking around, or whatever.

- Mental time off. When I have something stressful with a client or there is some big meeting set for a few days from now I prepare and that's it. When I'm comfortable or even if I'm anxious I just tell myself, "I'm not thinking about this again until such and such day or time." It's really empowering and works. Probably the best thing I do.

- Yoga, just a little to loosen up, I like Tara Stile's videos on YouTube, they are for all ability levels.

- Mobility work. One good example is the Limber 11. Learn about your body. A foam roller, a ball, and some light aerobic work get your blood flowing and endorphins going. It just feels good. Also a little time at the gym you get to see other humans and it can be mentally relaxing since your body is doing the work instead of your brain.

- Skydiving. It's a sport that I really enjoy. I know it sounds odd but as soon as you step on a plane the rest of the world just goes on hold. You're focused on that jump and what the objective is (4-way, competition, whatever) that nothing else really matters. It's a common theme with skydivers. Perhaps you can find something similar in your life.

- Learning. I enjoy learning about new things and it's a mental break.

Just take it easy, do what you do well, learn how to turn focus on and off. It a skill that you just have to work on like anything else.

Mostly white noise and sounds of rain and thunderstorms.

If I'm doing something more mundane I'll often play some PluralSight or some programming podcast in the background. I've learned to tune out the talking until something interesting comes up.

Perhaps because it's playing at 1.5x speed my brain doesn't quite perceive it as a human voice. Most music distracts me, perhaps due to my musical background.

Not sure, but it works for me.

There are a lot of really interesting things happening in BI. First, many accounting and some business grads are now coming with database knowledge.

They're able to gain insights from data that the older generations in this space didn't have the skills to do.

Way more interesting to me are advances like Amazon's QuickSight [1] which is geared towards business data. You can just upload stuff (CSVs, ERP databases, etc.) and, perhaps, gain some insights. As they build intelligence around similar business data sets it should improve over time.

Next big thing, perhaps not. But definitely something to keep an eye on, at least in my space.

Agreed. I did see a few "disable your ad-blocker or you can't use our website" notices a couple months back but haven't seen one since.

It would be interesting to see what happened to their numbers. I imagine they alienated a lot of users by doing that and had to stop.

At my company we have an initiative to roll an ad-blocker out to about 2,500 desktops just to prevent the clean-up costs and improve user experience while using our own white lists. Given our industry, we just can't risk it even with threat management firewalls, OpenDNS Umbrella, and some well-engineered multi-layer security going on.

The disappointing thing for me is that I appreciate well-placed and curated ads. I white list some sites to support them, etc.

It's the websites the remind me of the sort of silliness in the movie Idiocracy [1] are impossible to use, not to mention trust with your computer.
