That's an interesting channel, though I've personally found it problematic. Nearly all its videos are very strongly negative on China. That makes me wonder do they have an agenda and are they twisting the truth in some cases? Would be great to get any insight on this.

I avoid using git command line for all the reasons above

Personally I use a UI for git which basically solves all of these problems. All the branches and commits are visible. If you want something somewhere, right click on it and you'll get all the available options. Nothing to memorize and everything is available!

My own favourite after testing out a few is SmartGit, but it's paid so not for everyone. There are lots of free git UIs out there as well, but what I like about SmartGit is that it's completely full featured - every obscure git command is available somewhere - so I have never ever need to use git command line when on my local machine, not even for these obscure things like resets, rebase, cherry pick, squashed commits, etc you name it. Also SmartGit is cross platform so I can use it anywhere

I mean I don't think that forgetting our principles and indiscriminately screwing with everything inside Russia's borders because it's all fair game is the way to go either. So for example in this case if we want to damage the censorship agency we ideally remove PII of anyone who is innocent within the leak. I.e. anyone that doesn't actually work for the agency at least.

Weird, I use teams regularly and have no real issues. I've experienced some of the issues others describe here, but they aren't major and every software has some little abrasions here and there. I wouldn't single Teams out at all. I think it does what it's supposed to

I use a couple pretty simple measures to get the technical debt idea across, with the numbers variable:

"if we invest around 3 months now then we will reduce the time to market of every subsequent feature by about 2x and also decrease the number of bugs each feature produces by about 70%"

Then make sure they understand that these are just approximate estimates, but it gets the idea and the urgency across.

Sorry I agree with the overall sentiment that party line can shift with time unpredictably, but who had been banned in early 2020 for supporting masks? As I recall people socially self imposed masks in a matter of just a couple weeks early in the pandemic, in North America at least, and nobody would have been banned for it.

You may well find that any societal usefulness is offset by your own principles, whether that's privacy or aversion to tech or aversion to capitalism or aversion to marketing or aversion to small businesses or what have you. Can't argue with principles, and I won't try. The topic though is whether there is any societal usefulness or not.

You are right of course, it's not a perfect situation and, yes, many times may still not be able to get your cheese grater off the ground. My question remains though - if you are not allowed targeted advertising, what practical alternatives do you have to mass market your useful product?

We are not looking at this from the point of view of your personal preference where you would rather the product was in a store already, but from the point of view of a legitimate, useful small business which does not have access to a store and which is trying to match their product to consumers.

I don't think you've ever started a company with a new product. What if you make the world's best cheese grater. Nobody knows about it. You don't have connections to supermarkets. Smaller stores don't want to carry your niche item. You have $5000 budget to get your cheese grater out. How do you let people know about it?

Online targetted advertising is basically the current established way to find those people who actually would care about your special cheese grater and start to get your business going. If you're looking at alternatives those would be either untargetted online advertising (incredibly inefficient, only people who don't care about cheese graters would see your ads and that's your $5000 down the toilet) or real world advertising like... Door to door salesmen? Or take out fliers in your local newspaper? That's what people used to do

If you feel cheese graters are useless and somehow deserve to remain unbought, then replace it with any other item which does match your bar for utility value.

That seems a pretty smart short (in retrospect). I guess you were banking on them releasing concrete numbers on the iOS changes and people panicking from it? Seems really obvious in retrospect and relies on pretty common knowledge so I'm surprised that worked so straightforward. Good job.

Hey. I've never worked for a FAANG, but I am considering joining Facebook. They way I see it, Facebook is hugely impactful and there is real work to do there, ex: flagging disinformation, flagging external government influences, etc. It's challenging and extremely valuable work.

If everyone who works at Facebook is blacklisted by people like you, it would just make the company a worse influence on the world because there would be noone left there to make it better. So I would prefer if good people had the freedom to try to make an impact according to their will without fear that people such as yourself will then work hard to tarnish their reputations. Thanks!
