I really, really love fasting. It's when you starve yourself. Many people can't do it but I'm living proof that you can. It raises adrenaline and lowers cortisol so I feel just peppy through the day. And now because I went for a week without eating last month and described a mechanism, I have the honor of being a father figure to all of you in telling you that you, too, may starve, and one day achieve the health goals that I've achieved as of last month. I'm a Google engineer btw

Edit: stop PMing me asking for pictures and blood test results. HUGE invasion of privacy

Who cares whether the employees get more done? Two questions matter.

Are employees less depressed? (-->prevents PR issues)

Does the company get more done in the long term? (<--maximized retention)

This is a shit job and being close to other humans makes it easier to cope.

And yet, in every 100 bullshit tech-bro commenters, there are 10 who are actually getting really interested in the subject and taking the time to check their old Bio notes, research opposing viewpoints, or maybe even bring something new to the table.

Hating is easy. All you have to do is point fingers at people and tell them they know nothing. 100% of the time you'll be right.

This is flamebait, but way too subtle to be flagged.

Another Reddit-tier post. Thanks. Have an upvote :>)

Do a presentation on all of the problems technology has caused for humans. Bring in a small aquarium full of fish and dump crude oil in it and dissect the fish. Talk about research on the effects excessive technology use and automation have on the human brain. You can use cardboard cutouts to represent different neurotransmitters. Show them videos of the war in Syria.

Then talk about how you're helping them by getting them addicted to technology early so that in adulthood they won't remember being sober.

I think it's a little silly that humans are willing to progress against their nature and let women into the workforce on equal standing but not have any additional social rules enforced. Being progressive is more than opening the door and patting yourself on the back for it. No one cares that you voted Clinton if you still talk like you're in a 60s.

It seems like we want social change, but we don't want to accept the risk of ostracism that comes with it. We want to change everyone else.

I've actually thought quite a bit about this issue over the past few years. Essentially the problem is that students with parents who did not score well are fighting a constant uphill battle.

Grade families like classes. The "class average" should always be a C (assume for sake of explanation that a C is 2000).

C, the student's initial score (call it the "crude score", C) is computed the same way it's always been

P is the student's penalty, computed from a weighted average of all of their ancestors' crude scores (w_k...w_1) as well as theirs (w_0).

For the next generation,

set w_k := w_(k-1)

if C > C_av: w_0 = w_1 * w_2 else: w_0 = w_1

normalize w_0...w_k

P = (sum(w_0...w_k) - C_av) * urgency

Where urgency is a measure of how in need the disadvantaged groups are as well as their numbers. This can be adjusted manually based on the political climate, maybe by a DAO that governs the College Board on the Ethereum blockchain.

I find that having a 163 IQ generally helps -- people in this bracket generally don't have such problems because they can easily reason out of their current situation. I can empathize with people who can't, though, but it's definitely a mental state.

My favorite is when they're freaks about safety and try to be altruistic (ex: "where's your helmet?")...

...by slowing down, driving on your shoulder, and screaming at you.

Had someone do this at an exit to the freeway once. I had to stop and walk across.

And do you really think that he's the only one who had access to that information? If you're interested in the truth, you should be glad that someone out there is able and chooses to provide you with new information, even if he doesn't provide all of it.

I think the constant reminder that reusable is the only option probably injects the idea of just carrying your shyet into the collective consciousness. To what degree I don't know, but the few times I've bought one of those reusable bags I just never used it and brought a backpack or opposable thumbs next time.

By the way, does anyone know why a lot of shops on the east coast will bag single items? I went to a CVS to buy some sunscreen and they put it in a plastic bag without even asking if I needed one.

I honestly wonder whether anyone else has had my philosophical crisis this past few years. I started to think all of my attempts to be part of an elite group that's "changing the world" through technology are actually fucking it up more.

Whether this is fueled by burnout or a feeling of uneasiness with world events I can't be sure. I'm getting scared though because if I don't get my motivation back in a few years being broke is going to suck.
