I've returned to FreeBSD after many years, and I just built 14.0 to get CUDA working. CUDA doesn't need this to run AFAIK. This is about the kernel providing a module that allows a direct rendering interface. CUDA doesn't render to the screen. IIRC, DRI/drm are kernel drivers for graphics that map the GPU video memory window into your process so you don't have to copy data or send it though a pipe or some such nonsense. it was a video optimization from the early days of Linux graphics when copying

this is very, very true. I found out long ago that I have a favorable reaction of calm clarity and default to logic instead of freezing or overreacting, and I also found out that without training I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. I would much rather be hyperventilating and shaking but have a clear training-based plan of action than to calmly realize I'm useless at the moment. I still do my best, but I think people overvalue clear thinking in the moment.

I had the same questions when I was about your age and found a lot of intersting answers in the Linux source code. of course it was a lot simpler back then. what really got me going was the osdev community (much smaller back then) and Intels system architecture documentation. iirc part 3a or 3b was where the good stuff is. it tells you a lot less about how things are and a lot more about how things could be. you also get to learn plenty of fun things in OSDEV too like how 32bit processors did 36bit addressing with PAE or how 64bit processors did 52bit addressing to squeeze money out of people. how computers start in 16bit mode and you have to learn systems level assembly code gymnastics to make it to long mode, why there's an 8bit mode around, and more. if you liked learning about loading binaries, you'll love how many surprises still exist. like 64bit mode still including memory segmentation but forcing it to flat mapping for lonh mode

I've heard of situations where founders issue a large pool of shares owned by the corporation itself and bill hours to the company, receiving a fair payout of their target share price in dollars as one share, and each founder can put in as much work as they have time to invest. I don't recommend this, but it's something I saw a couple guys do when they both had fluctuating free time to commit.

As a person who used to have total recall, count yourself blessed. Aside from ruining intimate, family, professional, and casual relationships by trivially quoting and correcting hypocrisy verbatim, and having an encyclopedia of cringe that keeps me from sleeping in peace and being a wreck when I get to address a crowd or do anything else that can make me the center of attention, I have to say that the most intense way in which you have a sense of loss and mortality comes from the realization that you are losing your gift and your mind is always filling in the memory gaps and you have a lifetime of knowing that you will find the perfect answer to the question of how you remember the past and instead of the answers you seek being unknown to you, you have invented a particular piece of history that never happened. It hurts and you have to be careful not to make a mistake and writing down important things is something that I started doing in my 40s. For all of my education, I remembered everything and never relied on notes. I finished a bachelor's degree and I never had a notebook. Just a calender. Fun fact: calendars are like an table of contents that point me to information. Another fun fact: I don't make a clear distinction between me and other people speaking, and have an easy time extracting and storing meaning from conversation or lecture or videos with info.

Oh, she lied and got me arrested, used all my savings, income, and business for drug money, married me for 2 months, sold the engagement ring for more drug money, then left me to rot in jail. The PSP is not the same as SGX. That's more like the management engine, and while I agree that both Intel and AMD are shipping that antiuser "feautue" and that AMD had its own implementation of a trusted execution environment like SGX, the current AMD chips do not ship with it. AMD is not perfect, but it's sad that people can choose one or the other and still prefer to hand Intel their money when Intel goes out of their way to take advantage of their users.

- Intel wanted to lock users to RamBus RDRAM which was incompatible with AMD chips and a patented technology which AMD would not be able to use.

- Intel shipped the aforemtioned CPU identifier. Intel did the management engine first.

- Intel locks its chips from frequency tuning so they can charge more for overclocking.

- Intel locks the amount of RAM that is addressable by their chips arbitrarily rather than basing it on hardware support in order to squeeze more money out of you.

- Intel and NVIDIA locked their GPU linking technology (SLI) while AMD allows Crossfire to run on both Intel and AMD processors.

These are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. Not all of them may be current, but it's obvious that Intel has no problem extorting money from their customers in a million ways where AMD doesn't play this disgusting game.

You say we can't force companies to not use tech in anti user ways, but then you'll give them your money becuase you can't find a laptop with an AMD chip. And I assume you just haven't shopped for a laptop long enough or you'd find one that matches your needs without Intel taking a dump on your chest while pretending to care about anything more than your money.

This concept of continually restricting the owner of a processor from controlling the code that executes on his machine is a futile attempt at providing "products" which are nothing more than theft. The only reason this is a requirement for POWERDVD is because they insist on treating people like thieves and locking down the ability to watch high quality movies behind a wall that keeps the user from seeing and controlling code executed on their device.

The Secret Network is also attempting to force users to execute code which they cannot inspect or modify in order to implement the core component that sets their bullshit crypto block chain aside from Ethereum, for example. They're not selling some novel software. They're selling Ethereum running in SGX to keep you from copying NFTs or inspecting the content of smart contracts. Furthermore, anyone running this or other SGX software should be ashamed of themselves for allowing these thieves to pretend they're doing anything other than taking advantage of a poorly implemented scheme to deprive you of your control over your property.

Few people seem to recall the blowback Intel got over their Pentium III chips containing a unique processor ID, and how they went as far as having the ID disabled by default in every BIOS to keep people from mass migrating to AMD. The same thing should happen with these trash SGX implementations, and the most embarrassing thing is that Intel plans to launch software defined silicon, making users pay for CPU features while shipping the exact same chip to everyone. Frankly, everyone should be ashamed for using Intel hardware when AMD chips do not abuse the user with these schemes and generally allow much more freedom. Intel makes people pay for frequency unlocked chips, pay for features shipped with the chip, and even pay to have code they do not control run on their system. If this isn't an absolute embarrassment to anyone purchasing CPUs, it's a poor reflection on them and their obvious stupidity and contempt for their own freedom.

I had to scroll way too far for this. You're a hero we don't deserve, but desperately need. One of the most infuriating things about the discussions here is the seemingly never ending supply of people with a passionate opinion on the subject of an article they didn't read because of a pay wall. It's likely due to how certain browsers / clients had the ability to hit the free trial by opening each link as a new session, and how that's not working like it used to, so people take what they can get. Can I recommend a ThinkPad P series with Linux and some tuning? I've had nothing but good experiences for the most part. The only things I wouldn't recommend is a 4K laptop screen, Lenovo's prices for upgrades, or trying to get good power management in Linux. Make sure your CPU fans are turning when hear goes up or fix thinkfan config and check lm-sensors and don't use hibernate and force sleep mode to old/compatible/S3/other OS/Linux or whatever the option is called for you. Note about windows sleep mode: Microsoft worked with new firmware manufacturers for laptops to include sleep mode that's actually not sleeping but the CPU runs at 400MHz with the screen off. All your apps are still on, your computer is online, and things are happening while you think it's asleep. It uses very little power so actually being asleep or being in this mode doesn't change battery drain too much. However Linux won't play ball and it'll just wake up your computer and drain your battery while heating up your laptop bag. Turn it off.

It can protect whatever the contract says. Usually, severance packages include a nondisparagement clause. I highly recommend requesting that they amend it to say "mutual nondisparagement" and re-word the terms to apply to both the employer and employee. That way you get paid to shut up, but they are also forced to abstain from making potentially disparaging statements about you. It's a good ask.

Can you no longer use windbg to attach to a running kernel on a remote box, and debug the remote box from your development machine? I believe that's how kernel debugging is generally done.
