If you trace this thread backwards to its root (by essentially responding to every answer with "so what?"), you end up with the question "would it a 'bad thing' if humanity were to become extinct?"

Anecdotally, the vast majority of people I've met - from all walks of life and religious/political leanings - will answer this question with an unthinking "yes, of course that's bad".

I've been curious lately why this is. From the standpoint of Christianity, isn't the end goal rapture followed by total extinction anyway? From the standpoint of agnosticism/atheism, wouldn't an extinction mean the end of human suffering?

As someone who has regularly ridden Amtrak trains the past 15 years, I've actually always been surprised at the lack of passenger possession screening before boarding. Anyone can bring anything they want onto a train, at any time.

A lot of the comments here are laughing at the absurdity of a train hijacking, but I think the greater threat is someone or some group of people choosing a packed train as the very soft target it is for a domestic terrorist attack or mass shooting.

To be clear, most places in America are soft targets for people who want to perpetrate mass casualty events. But while generally people can run and hide, there is no where to run and nowhere to hide on a train.

For sure, speaking for the Navy (though I'm sure the same applies for the other services as well). Cryptologic/electronic/nuclear fields are all known to be cash cows after getting out. Granted, you need to score well on your ASVAB, especially for nuclear fields. But the ASVAB can be studied for and is probably the easiest of all the standardized tests someone that age may face in my experience.

There's a saying in the Navy I was told from day 1 at the recruiter's office:

Choose your rate, choose your fate.

Your choice can be the difference between getting out after 4-6 years and easily making six figures, or struggling to find employment at $35k. Not to mention your lifestyle while in and other side effects of your service like PTSD.
