I wonder if part of the motivation in releasing this is legitimizing the Flipper as a hobby/development product and not a tool for crime, as it’s been depicted in media recently. I personally appreciate the Flipper in that it’s shedding light on how insecure common RF technology is.

The issue you mentioned is why I can’t use the Plex client for playback. I use Infuse which handles seeking fine so clearly it’s not an unsolvable problem. Crazy Plex hasn’t addressed it.

Lots of peoples reaction to this is that suicide is always bad when done by firearm because it’s gruesome or frightening to them. I would ask that these people introspect and ask if their own emotions and biases are leading them to this conclusion. If the goal here is to let people live and die on their own terms, then this seems like a particularly hypocritical take. I think to many, suicide by gun is favorable as more immediate, private, and time and place are entirely within your own control.

If you’re interested in genomics I’d recommend working for a commercial entity in clinical/translational genomics side rather than in academia. I have worked for a few of the big names in the space and although they had their problems the work was very rewarding as you’re closer to the patient impact.

Renewable energy investment makes up about 80% of investment in the power sector, and annual increases continue to outpace oil and gas investment (this year may be weird because of the Energy crisis in Europe). Renewables are not everywhere today because it takes time for the industry to mature and for utilization to increase, not because there is a conspiracy by Big Oil to somehow control investment flows.

Certification is the process of getting an aircraft design/model approved by the FAA for sale/use. There are 3 phases for GA commercially available aircraft, type certification (design approved), production certification (manufacturing approved), and airworthiness certification (plane tested, and ready for sale to the public)

Usually when someone says a plane has received its certification they mean it’s ‘airworthiness certification’, so the final approval by the FAA.

The government is naturally incentivized to maximize revenue. Individuals are incentivized to pay as little tax as they can, legally. Private tax prep software is pretty aggressive about identifying all possible deductions to reported income. The government would not be as motivated in designing their own system. You can see this in the paper filing forms, they have detailed instructions, but almost nothing on how to reduce tax paid, besides things like the child tax credit and earned income tax credit.

Most things stop being cool when they become mainstream. Tech used to be exclusive to a small group of people who understood it, the hacker counter culture grew from this and for a while gated entry into the tech community. Now tech careers are considered akin to any other good white collar job. You don’t have to have a specific personality to discover it or thrive within it. Its pedestrian now and has be very successfully commercialized.

For people who have the money and plan these 0% interest short/medium term loans can be a good deal. However, like this story shows you have to evaluate the reputation of the company because problems can happen. Personally if I were the author I would have just repaid the final payment, waited for the chargeback reversal to put me in a positive balance situation, then worked with Affirm to get a refund. I live in a very cold part of the US but for a couple years traveled frequently to the south of Israel for work. I think a lot of people don’t consider dressing or designing spaces for high heats because most people live in temperate climates. It wasn’t unusual to have 113+ days there in the summer and no one but me (the American) seemed phased by it.

I’m amazed at how people see themselves as stuck or forced into their job, especially the younger ones and especially people without kids. For people in that position there are almost endless possibilities for ways to make a living. I’m concerned that many of the people in these communities are depressed and suffering from anhedonia and a self reinforcing cycle of hopelessness.

Yes, for US citizens the right to information is almost unlimited. Even plans for (nuclear) weapons is protected unless it’s stolen classified material, you intend to develop a nuclear weapon, or you intend to export that information.

Specific anti-kickback laws only exist at the federal level for specific industries within federal purview like healthcare (through departments like CMS). Wire fraud is more general but is an avenue for the justice department to prosecute behavior like this (the crime is not specific to orchestrating a kickback scheme but defrauding his employer for personal gain).
