Hopefully this will really end commingling. I received a pair of bicycle tires as a gift (they bought on Amazon instead of locally) and even though everything looked identical, one tire was somewhat stiffer and weighed 100g more. I wouldn't have really known (at least) one was counterfeit if both had been or i only got one.. really messed up for certain products. Hopefully the flea and tick or worm medicine for my pets is authentic (tractor supply or similar is too far)..

Noticed as a kid I could flip a quarter with a certain consistency, so I experimented a bit and quickly got to be >90% accurate with an ordinary (controlled) flip.

Pretty simple. In fact I just picked up a quarter and practiced (20+ years out of practice) and have some observations: 1) harder than when I was a kid, my fingers are lot bigger + stronger so it's not as precise from the start. A bigger and heavier coin would help. 2) the timing factor is bigger than I recalled.. essentially you can watch the coin flipping and get a subconscious/automatic/predictable sort of count/feedback to it. You can bring your hand up to the coin in the air at a precise moment pretty easily and "tell" (>90% accuracy today of the flips I just did that I considered successful before looking at the result) if the flip was predictable. Hand eye coordination, spatial awareness is very correlated to this skill, I suppose. 3) it really is the same side that comes up.. again I think because of the automatic watching/count/completion of full rotations, i.e. catching the coin at the end of a full rotation instead of a partial.

Came in handy occasionally.. if I knew I was going to be wrong (other person usually waits to call mid-flip) I could catch the coin a little lower to give myself a chance, or punk them by not putting it on the back of my hand as is more standard (they might demand a re-flip.. kind of like if you are playing rock paper scissors and one person goes on 3 and the other on 4).

As an example (the only case that I've identified personally), if your curious, I have a (windows; Intel q6600) box that I use for gaming occasionally. Single player game I like, Total War: Shogun 2, runs at about 55 fps (benchmark) pre-Meltdown/Spectre/etc. Now it gets ~22 fps. I can use https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm to toggle some mitigations to get it playable again.

It'd be nice to be able to easily boot into, or toggle into, a performance optimized, disabled mitigations environment to do something while offline.. many computer uses don't require being connected to other computers. I've gotten into the habit of hotplugging my Ethernet connection, personally.

To be fair, I am mostly surprised there are not yet EV or hybrid vans, versus PVs on the roof. Seems like stop-and-go, or lots of idling, fleets would benefit signifigantly.

I imagine vans use the battery for more than propulsion, so PVs on the roof might be welcome. Charging from a generator is probably still more cost-effective, except for some niches (e.g. boon-docking). Lots of van-dwellers have PVs on their roof.

That might be interesting, actually. Has it been done? I've been an advocate for "coin flipping is not random" since I was young and could flip heads or tails on demand (about 80% accurate, but I didn't practice all that much). Caveat being I catch the coin in my hand on the way down (not letting it hit the floor) and know which side was up before flipping.

Essentially, does the beat of the song (or whatever) influence timings and force applied enough to bias the results?

Probably? Personally my first semester at uni was depressingly dull other than the novelty and the subjects (well, mostly dull there too but the future semesters looked interesting and I was programming for the first time). By chance I was walking through a club recruitment event when a single person stopped to talk to me and tried to convince me to join and come to a meeting that night. They got my email too. Well, I didn't go to the meeting but a few days later an email showed up saying the first practice will be tomorrow. I figured why not, I'm not doing anything, and showed up. I stuck with it for four years, taking on duties over time until I was president, it was most of my social life (e.g parties, hanging out) and I made most of my friends through it, shifted my lifestyle from videogames and procrastination to working out, having fun with sport and mastering it, having flow/mushin consistently, and getting work done ASAP, and other considerations.

I've never felt the desire to donate to my old college, but certainly I already have donated to my old club and have considered doing more for it. I assume folks with very good experiences were part of some sort of organization: my high school friends that stuck together in college without branching out had a good time but was overall meh.

Should I (or do I?) own the firmware, OS, applications, etc? Maybe, maybe not. Certainly if I own a device, I should have the capability to use the device to its fullest with my own owned software (i.e. no gimping of hardware/firmware allowed depending on what is booting) i.e. I do not really own my iPhone. The DRM/trusted computing ecosystem might then be (realistically) opt-out via taking an alternative fork (running alternative software) of the web/tree/chain of trust. There need not be only one DRM/trusted computing fork, all-or-nothing choice, though.

I guess it's just semantics then, tomato tomato. One could theoretically make a digital painting with a DRM-enabled stack and could be left with only one (more likely to see DRM-enabled stacks coming to video/picture cameras, though). It's up for debate whether meat-space scarcity is more ... "authentic"? (higher effort to duplicate?) thanks to physics than something digital (e.g. DRM systems that might be more easily broken).

What does digital scarcity even mean ?

In a world of trusted computing, it might mean some amazing HD+++ digital image being one-of-a-kind (and having some attestation/proof of origin, authorship, etc), even if there are lower res/quality versions out there for cheaper/free. It also might mean other granularities to accessing the data like functional permissions (e.g. for this version of the encrypted, wrapped data, the computer is only allowed to apply function X (265a1b..), or function Y (f00fe7..) is blacklisted, or the computer is allowed to view once or infinitely, etc). That might sound like shit to many, but certainly not to all.
