While economy and consumerism are destroying our planet, we are complaining about the UX of an emergency call.. In other news stories I see participants of Extinction Rebellion being arrested by police as if they were criminals, while temperatures world wide are breaking all records and the ramifications are clearly seen almost anywhere on the planet. It just renders me speechless.

Especially the tests should prove it. In almost none of the comments I see thorough testing is taken into consideration. No IDE can replace good tests today AFAIK.

Code should live in your head. You shouldn't need intellisense to see that a property doesn't exist in an object. I hate code completion, most of the time it gets in the way of your thought process. Even if it can gain you a little speed increase, it still is better to write things down for your 'codebase memory'.

That's why I despise the current web development stack. You need Typescript, otherwise you might make a mistake with types? Never had that problem in the past. And just like typo's I make mistakes a once in a while, but that's OK because it helps me to learn the codebase better. You need a linter? Same story, it's always in the way as if it is more capable than me writing code. Prettier? It automatically formats your code, so the codebase doesn't resemble the one in your head anymore.

I know it does work for some people and I can totally imagine that for a beginner developer it can make the difference, but for me it doesn't. In the current/modern web stack I feel like having brick walls everywhere around me and my code is definitely not getting better from it, I'm just constantly struggling with all those 'handy' and 'necessary' tools while my code memory deteriorates. Even worse is that on almost any project I professionally work on requires all those tools, not using them makes me an amateur, even in the eyes of junior dev's.

I believe in writing every character of my code and testing it thoroughly, I wrote many bug free codebases with it, that's my experience.

I assume the amount of HN articles per day has increased over the years since 2007 along with the growth of HN popularity. So, when I see a trend in some subject would it take that into account? Otherwise it could easily not be a trend but an increased amount of HN users.

TypeScript crew have managed to build something that can get traction where other efforts have not.

You mean Microsoft managed to get traction? It seems most TS proponents don't realize TS is a success because they fell for smart marketing and serious money behind the project, not because it's a better language than 'other efforts' like for example Purescript or Dart.

But every comment I make against TS seems futile. TS proponents defend their little language very fiercely regardless of all the flaws it has. It's almost worth a study how Microsoft managed to do that. Overall a real pity, because there are so many better options and ideas for those who want static typing. TS is actually the worse choice IMAO.

Because the UX suffers from UI design that is driven by marketing. UI design should be driven by a passion to create the best UX, but that's almost impossible in this $$$ world..

I moved to FF + Duckduckgo engine a while ago, it will be extremely hard for them to win me back.

I moved back to linux (fedora) a while ago, what a relief and what a joy it is compared to Windows.

I use Firefox with duckduckgo search engine, no pages full of ad results like with google nowadays. I cannot think of 1 single reason to install Windows 10 and use Chrome browser, you just bite yourself with that choice.

This far? You mean on the road to our complete extinction due to our incomparable stupidity? I sometimes feel truly ashamed to be a human. It's the ego that ruins it all, we could have been so much further. People should learn to be more humble and reject the desire for authority.

For many indeed this leads to some kind of 'happiness'. Buffering our inabilities with lying to ourselves about it. Why did we never learn to be truly happy while being average or even below average. Why did we never learn to tame the ego? It's a curse for life.

But tbh our school system just teaches a baseline of abilities we think our youths should know.

Just teaches? You mean forces upon children maybe? So what about being punished for not reaching that baseline? What do we learn from that? We learn so much more than the stuff in the textbooks. Our schools and surroundings teach us to be stupid about so many things, it's completely overlooked.

If the result of schools were to be good, how come this civilization is characterized by: war, pollution, destruction of species, poverty, etc, etc.. Something must be wrong there, it must be our education not coincidence.

Wow, that took a while! For already about 9 years this feature is in Coffeescript. And indeed it must be the star of the show because once you're used to that you almost can't live without it. Why did JS/ESxx never copied that idea?

Our school system.. We don't dare to be honest we do not know stuff. For our entire youth we are punished for that with bad figures and bullying.

Therefore the picture at the top of the article is so fitting. Especially lots of people that are graduated have some kind of air around them. Our educational system fucks the mind and ego. Is Einstein not enough prove for the 'being educated' fallacy? He despised the educational system, and I think he was also very right about that.

Planting trees is good, but it won't solve our problems. It would be nice if governments first halt and prohibit the destruction of our existing forests in case that happens for a profit. Same counts for all other resources like gas, oil, minerals, etc.. It should not be possible to farm that for profit, it should only be allowed when there is a real proven need where the loss can be calculated and compensated to assure future life and to prevent the extinction of species.

If this depletion of resources continues at the current rate, we are in fact committing suicide at a planetary scale. The sad thing is that we can only look and talk about it, there is no control by anyone. We wanted democracy, well this is one of the traits of democracy. No control, but above all discussion and corruption(for profit). I'm afraid that if our governing systems remain dictatorial, communist, democratic, etc.. we won't make it into the next century. Totally second this. I see novice web developers writing in Typescript in an effort to be more type save and at the same time using hundreds of npm packages that are often written by amateurs that make basic mistakes.

Just take an average startups web project node_modules directory, what's inside there? Hundreds and hundreds of packages of which most are dependencies of other packages. Anyone could have written it! Novice devs swear by using Typescript, but at the same time using hundreds of black boxes that can easily contain stuff way more damaging that a string applied to a number..

The keeping safe argument from government is indeed preposterous. As if that was their mission to keep us safe. Why are they allowing our nature to be destroyed in favor of money/economy? This years heatwaves killed many thousands of people in Europe only, some estimates are in the tens of thousands. This is real deaths in 1 year, not because of terrorist attacks, no fucking backdoor will stop this. And what are they doing? Measures that won't make any difference. The cars will keep driving, the factories continue to produce poisons. Pesticides will still be allowed for better economy at the cost of entire insect species being wiped from this planet in just a few decades. The list goes on and on. It is so sad that I don't really want to listen to politicians anymore. They are the only ones who can change things by law, not me. And what law are they coming with for my safety? A backdoor for Whatsapp and Facebook.. We better ignore all this shit and try to enjoy our little lives for as long it will last.

You are right about the Whales. I think regulation should prevent massive mining factories, which would also greatly reduce the risk for a 50% attack. Mining should only be allowed for individuals with a certain maximum hash rate so more people have equal chances. But I'm afraid our politicians are not going to help us with that.

When you stick with the government this statement indeed could become a reality. And that's why non-regulated payment systems are preferred. In the hands of banks, corporations, etc.. cryptocurrencies lose their ideal because these parties will always build their regulating mechanisms in the algorithm, without it they are not interested.

The idea is great. But the low quality of many code examples puts me off. For me it would only work if the examples shown are made by a selection of top level developers. Then it would be really nice actually.

About the site design, the little menu on the left should better not move the content window to the right. Now, when you scroll down in 'all idioms' for example, the list is right aligned and left has useless whitespace. A horizontal menu or dropdown would be better I guess.

I moved away from web development after many years of full-stack development. It almost totally destroyed the joy I had in programming.

  - happy Agile team? That alone will cost you 2 days of work per week due to meetings, planning etc.. 

  - Javascript? No, it has to be Typescript for even the most futile websites nowadays, and yes, TS adds another 20% of workload

  - TDD, with a dedicated testing engineer?, no of course not, you do it yourself! Another 20% of added workload

  - A shitload of tooling from linters to bundlers and whatever else that always needs some attention

  - Deployement, done by a devops engineer? you must be joking right? That's also the work of the full-stack dev.. 

I really hoped their focus would be on making an even better keyboard than the one in MBP 2015, and of course the return of at least the physical escape key.. But to be honest, I gave up all hope on that. They destroyed the MBP, making it a more classy thing for the upper class maybe? At least, the latter seems to become more and more their market.

For now I stick to my 2015 MBP, keeping it alive as long as possible. I refuse to go to Windows. Although it's a solid OS, it feels like it's infected by multiple viruses to me. They can go F* their selves with all their add-ware rubbish, forced auto updates(silently adding even more sophisticated viruses), sending home heaps of private data(including my keystrokes), etc, etc.. And although I love Linux, as on OS it's just not good enough yet compared to OSX IMHO.

It's not that I don't understand it, it's just very confusing for anyone hearing that for the first time. Is it freeware? No, it's like free speech not free beer. Come on, we can do better.
