This is the same ‘no true scotsman’ argument used with scrum. Over 15 years I’ve very rarely had anything productive come out of 1:1s. I think some people just require more support than others. I personally find them to be an enormous waste of time.

But I think a certain amount of hubris is what's causing all these companies to take a swing and then back out once they realize what they're up against. It's not an easy nut to crack. The software in itself is incredibly complicated, not to mention the politics involved, and all the special interests you have to win over before you can even pass go. But then the fact that you need to attach it to a car means you also have to compete in one of the largest and most competitive industries that ever existed.

As someone who's worked for one of the big 3, the supply chain and logistics is mind-boggling. Not to mention what it takes to create factories that can put out vehicles at the rate of the big guys. I don't think Google or any other software company could compete without completely retooling their entire company. It's not something you can do as a side project.

I'm not enthused about the touchbar and price increase, but I'll reluctantly buy one anyway because macos is still the best OS available, and the touchpad and gestures actually work. I could give two shits about thinness, dongles, and slick-looking aluminum bodies. If Windows ever gets good gesture support, working virtual screens, non-wonky hiDpi support, and a comparable trackpad, I'll switch immediately.

To be fair, the tech to support a single city is radically less impressive than a global operation, which means it's very easy for startups to fill the void when the big companies have already done all the work to create the market and then all vanish at the same time. Still, they're doing a great job, and most are on track to meet the city's regulations.

Concurrency is still as hard today as it was 40 years ago. Prudent developers avoid it whenever possible.

If I were hiring recruiters then I would absolutely look for this kind of passion. The point is, if you have the option to hire someone who works just for the money, or someone who has a personal interest in their work, usually you want the latter. Not all companies have that option, and not all developers fit that definition. There is room for everyone in this profession. But let's not pretend that those who practice less because they don't have a personal interest will magically end up as skilled as those who love it and put in the hours to become great.
