GitLab is not on rails 5.0 yet. But it's on its way.

I use both GL and GH every day. And I find GH's UX is much weaker, e.g. it doesn't remember last used sort options on the issues page which is huge annoying.

So this is subjective.

Actually there are many community contributions. E.g. for 9.5 it's 82 merged MRs from the community.

GitLab allows users to sign in using their GitHub accounts. It solves the `everyone has a GitHub account` problem.
