Yeh but sometimes what people value and like is a scam. You know, some people do like certain MLM brands or even cults, that doesn’t mean those aren’t scams/cults. Stop trying to normalize predatory behavior and institutions under the banner of “people value different things”

Maybe there’s no way to do it. Perhaps Twitter and other social networks were designed this way specifically to be immune to social control (and by consequence, to exerce social control) over well-established institutions.
It is still a thing, at least in Brazil afaik. My cousin went to one these retreats the other day, he tried to convince me to go with him but I don't like those. He said it was really intense and very "close to god".
Not while incentives for spamming others still exist. If corporations and governments are still seeing the internet as a way to maximize profits/popular approval, the spam will always be the norm.

I think this is exactly the point of posts like this. We have created an exploitable environment, that can be abused for several reasons (politics and economics, being the two most obvious). And the fact that it is abusable, makes it less of a thing "for humans" or, at least, something we have evolved to consume/participate every day, let alone every hour of our lives.
Yeah. It is less of a “roots” definition of hacker and more of a “how can I hack the system to get rich with technology”.
The other day I saw a post here asking people about how much they had saved and what their age was. A completely pointless dick-measuring thing, that I thought I wouldn’t find even in the likes of Reddit.
I follow HN on and off, usually just lurking, since 2017. But lately I’ve noticed a surprising amount of people humble bragging about their crypto wallets, their no-work-million-dollars startup, and how good their lives are since they left Facebook.
I notice that for people who are pro-vaccine, this “government authoritarianism” is not taken as, well, authoritarianism. It is rather perceived as the government caring for its people and adopting the necessary measures to control the situation. It’s interesting to see how different groups of society perceive the same issue from completely different angles.
If only there was a solution that 1) solved all of their problems listed and 2) protected them and society from the worst pandemic in recent years…
