“It is likely that at least major portions of the Hoover Dam will still be in place hundreds of thousands of years from now.”

From the article itself, the Pyramids are only 12,000 years old. Every other Ancient Wonder has been destroyed.

Essentially there’s a Major Cataclysm about every 10,000 years, and a ‘Minor’ one about every 5000 years (Burkle Crater impact being the most recent).

How do you assume any parts of the Hoover Dam would be intact or even visible “hundreds of thousands of years from now”?

I used to have have aphantasia.

Now, I can visualize and pre-plan projects and events in my mind's eye.

To get started I never did any techniques. Instead, I just listened to fantasy & fiction audiobooks (eg by GRRM and Joe Abercrombie).

Once I started seeing scenes in my imagination, I made the connection that "This is just like daydreaming or thinking of memories!"

Then I took some training on personal growth which practiced changing the size, color, dimensions, etc and now it's become a powerful tool.

The effects onto men are more internal. Whereas effects onto women are normally more external.

For example, a man could allow himself to be triggered into rage. And afterwards there will be no visible signs it happened within him.

But his wife could've been around him, and now she has purple bruises.

External signs are more easily measurable, and therefore reported more, therefore readers assume the most affected.

If the man had internal bio-signals measured, such as HRV, blood pressure, etc, you'd see the effects even BEFORE that of a beaten wife. (Of course there are also long-term health issues for being a slave to rage/anger/frustration)

My childhood conditioning was also something which recently unraveled for me.

The first time I had a heart-to-heart with my father, the center of my chest felt viscerally tender.

Mother stole a car and sold it to pay for a cocaine addiction. Father was such a workaholic that he simply marked her behaviors as "strange"... like her taking phone calls into a closet.

After the divorce my father had custody and remarried to continue his absence. (Normally left before I awoke, and I went to bed before he returned. He was even normally late for family dinners on holidays. When he was home, he was sleeping or watching TV)

Sometimes stepmother would return from work and vomit anger onto me and my stepsister. (Only about 2 years ago I realized it was Verbal Abuse)

Re-encoding memories was crucial for my awareness, and mental-emotional progress.

It's challenging at first, but after processing a few traumas, now when a deeper layer surfaces, I know I can immediately bring it to a therapeutic resolution.

"It's never too late to have a happy childhood."

I've lived in Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary... The key is to go to networking events. (Or co-working spaces, or just show up at their company and say you're interested in working there as an engineer and ask if you could get a quick tour)

If networking events don't happen in your country, then become the organizer. You'll instantly be seen as a leader and attendees will eventually want to talk with you. When you organize regularly, they'll start talking about you. Then you're "in".

If you don't live in the capital city, then it's worth the time & money to travel 1x a month or every 2 weeks. Ask attendees if anyone has a spare couch for you to stay on.

Themes for events you can use the major happenings like AI. Or 'duplicate' Meetup events in other cities.

Post flyers near companies doors, make event on FB & Meet-up, find developers on LinkedIn, there are so many options to get the word out. Split Test and discover which one is most effective (ask attendees where they heard about it)

In 11th-grade 'Honors' Chemistry, we ran the 'Which water freezes faster' experiment outside in ~0℉.

2 glass beakers with same amount of water: 1 hot, 1 cold, stirring both at the same rate. Teacher told us the experiment was over once ice starting forming on the surface…

Cold water developed ice first. Outside in that weather, no one waited to see how long hot takes to become ice.

Just because people are perceiving the "present day right wing [characterizing] Sanskrit", doesn't mean that everyone interprets & connects that with Sanskrit.

I engage with the language through Yoga, mantras and chanting,… and zero politicians interrupt that process, nor do I think about them.

Sanskrit has lived even before humans invented the idea of "the right wing".

This question is a Catch-22…

I know a Mexican, who knew that his way out, was by getting in somewhere better. He applied to a German University, with zero experience with the German language. But on the application he lied and marked 'Conversational fluency'… he was accepted, leveraged his new location, and since has been the 1st CTO of multiple companies.

The people who have a little bit of humble audacity & spontaneous enthusiasm, will find a way, and gravitate towards each other.

The problem with this question, is trying to avoid companies that "don't suck"… instead, the aim is to find an amazing company. (Some readers will shrug off this distinction, and the successful will have an 'A-ha!' moment) Because amazing companies filter out average people who are only trying to avoid non-suckiness.

Amazing companies hire amazing people.

Could you ask your engineering school to purchase some copies for a 'software engineering' library?

Or.. When I was doing an internship, my boss said they'd basically buy me any books I'd want. (the cost of a few books is a rounding error for any company who's paying engineers)

Software wages have also stagnated for ten years.

Where did you get that data?

everyone [is] highly expendable

even the best of the best? Anyone, in any industry, who fails to adjust to The Market, will be expended, because their production value drops below break-even. Toys "R" Us went bankrupt because parents can be riding the elevator, sitting on the john... and buy the exact toy their child wants...

The best way I've found is to imagine a physical tree, and perhaps go outside and stand in front of a big one...

Notice there are 2 types of parts:

  - A leaf, which is the end (has no children)
  - A branch, which may have leaves or more branches (has children)... and because a branch can have more branches, this is recursion, so we abstract to a 3rd type of part:
  - A node, which could be a branch or a leaf...
Imagine if you were blind and had to feel your hand up the stem, and when you reach a node, you'd move your hand up the node to check 'is this a leaf, or a branch' If it's a leaf, you mark it; but if it's a branch, you move your hand along the branch and do the same check for the next nodes 'is this a leaf, or a branch'...
  function int getNumLeaves(Node node):
    foreach childNode in node:
      if childNode.IsLeaf(): leafCount++
      else: return getNumLeaves(childNode) // NOT a leaf -> check this branch's children

print getNumLeaves(tree.stem); // (start with the outermost 'node')
The pseudocode above could have errors, but it's simple enough to get started for understanding;)

Blogs have done this for years via a "pingback".

There could be some confusion between "taking" and "sharing"...

He never claims to own the photo.

He credits the original content creator. Additionally, content creators love when their content is shared, because "Someone with an audience of 20k people just shared one of my photos?! #exposure!"

Standing on the shoulders of giants...

I've found most "new" teachings are based on past geniuses, with a modern-day twist to compensate for slang or technology...

I took a 10-day meditation course, originally developed by Buddha, and many of the guidelines run through to today's principles... Such as "Observe sensations, without judging, without reacting, without getting excited. Observe."

This! The subconscious mind is FAR more powerful than the conscious mind..

It's the part of the mind which is always operating.. A sure-fire tactic is to ask yourself a question right before bed, and allow it to do it's thing

I'm a former software engineer where noise and distractions used to bother me to NO end.. someone dropping a pin would make me cringe with frustration

5 minutes in a noisy sales office with 17 people and it all went away.. the brain adapts quickly..

I know building software is different though.. constructing an entire blueprint in the brain.. it takes focus.

One of my biggest mistakes is I rarely drew things out. If I ever went back to software, I would draw out the system, its parts, and each of the tasks/mini-projects before getting started

One of my friends received this. He was previously a rugby player and coach, but was feeling heavier and heavier every day. So he quit.

I think this type of income is best when 'between careers'.. when someone desires to walk a new path.

The alternative seems to be to leap into a new job, which could perpetuate misery.

But if a person has time to step away, and create stillness and clarity, then that decision can become obvious.

For him, the income was enough to live, for him to become a more conscious spender, and when he stopped receiving the money, he chose a new career in door-to-door sales which he's loving.

OP doesn't mention "psychology", nor "mental health issue", nor "personality trait"

Laziness isn't vague, nor judgemental. Laziness is marked by non-production. Which can be measured by simple time-tracking. How many hours a day is he coding/writing vs. on YouTube "passing the time".

Moreover, the post specifically says "symptoms". And he's attempting to discern between the words, specifically asking "What's the difference between..."

Jobs are like clothes. There is no "wrong job". There are jobs which fit now, and all other jobs.

A job may fit, then as we grow, we get new ones that fit better.

I would say the stages are usually:

#1: Grow out of the current job

#2: Still working same hours, but tasks become boring, therefore instead of the job fueling us, it drains us... causing Burnout.

#3: Then Laziness settles in, because putting energy into boring tasks only leads to Burnout.

#4: Spiraling down the Laziness slide, into Depression. Simply, Depression is a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. The antidote to Depression is doing... Doing new things we enjoy.

Therefore, take up an entirely new, and different practice. Perhaps move up to management. Or go to a new place, around new people.

TLDR: Do new.

I would completely disregard this advice.

"Everything else, stuff you will see and his advices won't help you because once you are in the situation yourself you won't be able to use that stuff. Long story, I'll tell why another time."

How could you know for certain it wouldn't help him?

Moreover, humans have mirror neurons which respond to actions that we observe in others. These mirror neurons fire in the same way when we actually recreate that action ourselves.

So if the student observes with intent, then his brain could subconsciously 'download' the CEO's behaviors.
