I understand the poll is misrepresented but I find the proposition to be extremely anti-human in the first place — climate change is a real threat, but any directives need to take in to consideration the death and misery caused by restricting the opportunity to travel freely.

The focus should be on reducing the average emissions for each mile travelled — reducing private flights, improving electrified road and rail networks and improving the economy of commercial flights.

I would also wager that the political and high business class would also not face this restriction should something like it ever come to exist.

My first employer had this rule — reverse parking only. If you parked the wrong way then reception would send you back out.

I recently had laser eye surgery and subsequently re-evaluated my relationship with glasses over the previous 15 years — obviously I was frustrated enough to get the surgery but hadn’t considered their impact holistically over my life.

My feeling is that glasses are annoying from -1, but their impact is tolerated as being able to see is a net gain.

If I had known of their existence beforehand I might have sought out Ortho-K lenses — you wear them whilst you sleep and then take them out for corrected vision during the day. They are more expensive than surgery in the long term (10+ years), but they are less invasive and might be something worth considering.

I don’t think it’s as trivial as you suggest, but yeah they could do that – they always could have made changes to flag crime or give access to criminal’s devices but they still refuse to do so.

The barrier for being accused by someone who matters is quite high, you’d need to breach a certain threshold of material. That material is then manually reviewed by a human and only then if it appears to be CSAM do they refer your details to the police. The police would then presumably also check the material is bad before arresting you and ceasing all your devices.

No, only if you save multiple CSAM images to your photo library and have iCloud Photo Library turned on.

The CCP can already scan everything server side – iCloud encryption is weaker in China and the servers are controlled by a different entity than Apple. Getting iPhones to scan for illicit content doesn’t help the CCP.

You can opt out of your pension contributions. You can’t opt-out of paying student loans, which is an available option with other debts.

Student loan deductions reduce a balance that doesn’t impact your credit score, can’t chase you for repayment (unless you do something stupid like move country and fail to inform them) and doesn’t impact lender decisions. Most people have no hope of repaying their ‘loan’ in their lifetimes and instead expect the loan to be written off after 25 years. U.K. student loans being debt is a technicality, it’s a tax with a countdown timer that might be shorter if you’re baller.

I think either rounding up, or rounding to the closest integer is fine. The authors expectation of always rounding down is the only option I would never expect.

I would be shocked if this happened, since Apple has no ecosystem of game developers whatsoever.

I’ve witnessed this behaviour firsthand too. Several months after leaving MedShr I left what I still felt was a very honest review. 4 weeks after submission I got an email that they had taken it down (along with previous positive reviews about earlier employers). After prodding their support they told me it was because of some undisclosed behaviour on my part.

Since then the page has become littered with reviews that are somewhat obviously fake. Most of them are written in a vaguely shielded corporate tone and they simply don’t have enough former employees with a positive opinion of them to have this kind of sudden influx of responses.

Glassdoor has thoroughly outlived its usefulness and I can’t say that I will be basing any of my decisions on who to join on it in the future.

Yeah I bought my television some years ago through their warehouse deals for around 40% off. It was seemingly entirely unused, whoever had purchased it previously had gone through the effort of partially attaching (or removing) the included vesa mount. Everything else was flawless; remote control, batteries and 3d glasses all still in their sealed packaging.

The Apple dialogs fwiw are at least easy to understand, and are distinctive for each security nag type. Having used Catalina in public beta over the last month it really does not feel like using Windows Vista, you get asked once for each application and after that, nada. The experience would be far better if macOS did not re-launch every open application after installing a major OS update so that the dialogs could be drip-fed as each app was used.

I do agree that better monitoring and reporting would be better, but these nags are for basic folder access and notifications. I do find it strange however that macOS now requires permission for an app to send notifications, whereas it is no longer required to provisionally send notifications to a user on iOS (until they turn them off).

I really enjoy it, when Apple reacts in anger to a hit-piece, like with Spotify, it makes them seem almost human in their response and it’s exactly how I may react if someone were to roast me in the group chat.

Granted, CEOs individually making angry statements in the heat of the moment is nothing new, but when Apple publish statements like this it really makes it appear as though the entire company feels this way (at least in the executive).

The iOS and iPad apps are native, as far as I can gather, and there are differences in how the conversations are laid out (e.g. date separators).

There are external GPUs now that use thunderbolt, prior to this you could run external displays at a greater resolution than was available via HDMI at the time.

Firewire was mostly not used because people were content to endure USB, and USB had a larger availability on consumer hardware. Apple gained nothing by spending money to add the port to their computers so I find it hard to buy that they had a secret malevolent purpose in doing so. In this case they rolled the dice on a superior solution and it didn’t pay off.

To my knowledge those described have some distinct advantage over what was available on the market at the time. Firewire was way faster, ADC carries USB, Thunderbolt is connected to PCIe, mini-vga and mini-dvi are self explanatory and their proprietary SATA like connection was, again, way faster.

This is nowhere near true for Europe, the floor is more like $30,000, probably less in some areas.
