Check out Rob Walling. He's got some podcasts and grown to some conferences now, but i keep going back to his book: Start Small, Stay Small: A Developer's Guide to Launching a Startup

Edit: just looked it up but see also Rob's new project TinySeed.com: The First Startup Accelerator Designed for Bootstrappers.

Reminds me of one of my favorite books titled:

Decoding the Universe: How the New Science of Information Is Explaining Everything in the Cosmos, from Our Brains to Black Holes, by Charles Seife

One item discussed in the book that we as humans may just be a transport method for the data within DNA to survive time. Because without some replication it would get trapped and cease to exist.

note too a replay solution could have infinite steps to have to reproduce, assuming its not optimized to take any shortcuts to jump to a re-occurring state.

I don't have all the answers, but here's where i'd start:

I'd start with a mentally forced mashup for each to get a few that might work. e.g. "If i've got to make money by lead generation with a medical bill review service/app, how could i do it?"

Then i'd focus on how we'd drive value to the consumers.

Then think about driving value to others parties who may be willing to pay for something similar.

ie would pharmaceutical and medical device companies be willing to communicate directly with these consumers?

note i'm not saying its easy by any means, but i do think its a real problem that could take off if an elegant and worthwhile solution came about.

see eCommerce Fraud Prevention. There are a few companies focused on this space to protect merchants from fraudulent chargebacks. But in short, you can get pretty complex with multiple vendors being leveraged, but the economics of fraud vs fraud prevention really depends on your business.

i agree that data is a liability, however even my plumber's truck can kill someone and can be considered a liability. regardless, the truck is not something he can do business without. I agree that companies should fear the data they retain much more than they do today.

1) stock siezure would kill the market. no one wants to invest in a company if the company stock can get yanked anytime. also, a share of stock is worth what someone will pay me for (ie when i want to convert that stock to cash). who will buy this from me if all of a sudden a bunch of people will take the JG wentworth option and cash out now.

2) i absolutely agree with the insurance companies being on the hook. They alone will drive insurance rates that are through the roof if the company cant prove pen-testing, employee background checks etc... Unfortunately teh key to making insurance company care, is setting a high standard for breach victim payouts. ie if it only ends up costing an average of $0.10 per individual victim, i dont need to insure equifax for that much?
