longstanding inequities in Silicon Valley recruitment and hiring

Maybe for intern postions or higher positions, but for regular software developer positions "longstanding inequities" is just not true. From my observation 80% of SWEs are immigrants, we graduated schools nobody heard of in the US. For interview purpose it didn't matter. For all the hate (rightfully) have for leetcode interviews, it doesn't care about your background.

There's a risk of considering oneself better than average and that aggregate statistics don't apply to you. Like most drivers consider them better drivers than average. I'd bet the same with gun owners or any other activity. You don't think you can repeat the stupid mistakes, but we all can, you get stressed, sick, drunk,... life is long and full opportunities to make a mistake and get you back to the average case.

Curious if you have example of racist US visa/immigration policy? There's a lot deserved criticism of current system, but can't think of anything specifically racist.

If I haven't rode both bicycle and skateboards for distance for a while, I'd have exact same thought as you. From my experience of casual rider, it's opposite - I can easily go for hours on skateboard, while on bicycle I get tired and uncomfortable. I've ridden same bike paths 10-20 miles on bicycle and skateboard, and for me skateboard is easier. My guess because on skateboard I can change body position and muscles involved, can switch legs, push or pump. While on bicycle I'm locked in the same position, using same muscles all the time.

Jogging is way way harder than skate, I can barely jog 5 miles, but on skateboard 5 miles i won't even sweat.

There're various types of longboards and indeed some are quite high and you end up doing one legged squat. Cycling is more efficient that skateboarding, but surprisingly by a small factor. 24h record for cycling is ~900km, while on skateboard ~500km.

Overall it's questionable on muscle efficiency. The main problem with scooters/skateboards is that beginners don't learn using second leg (it feels unnatural and takes practice). Thus getting tired with pushing with one leg.

Another thing at this form factor you can get electric skateboard, muscles are concern.

I think more people are familiar with riding bycicle and thus it maybe easier for them to go longer distance. But yeah scooter would be smaller and lighter,even electric powered ones. Longboard would be even lighter. It takes some practice to start, but for city commute it's quite good and can't beat the portability.

The main goal of this action is sound - cut off Russian economy from outside and it achieves it. There're undesirable side effects that you listed, but the main objective is still achieved. And we should keep prospective and direct the anger at right target, these inconveniences are not comparable to the terror millions of Ukrainians are under now.

why would USA be secret about supporting Ukraine? USA was one of the countries guaranteeing Ukraine's safety in exchange for nuclear weapons release. I would argue USA is not doing enough for what they signed up for.

I'm well aware of political situation in Ukraine. I took part in the protests of 2004 that led to "US-backed putsch", had nothing to do with USA. You're stripping Ukrainian people of any agency. Not everything is secretly manipulated by USA or Russia, people of the country are not mindless bots.

What are you talking about? Kharkiv and Mariupol are 95% russian speaking population. Before the Donbas events, these were very pro-russian cities, after Donabas the population learned what Russia is. The same amount of neo-nazis tehy can find in Minsk or St. Petersberg, may as well bomb these.

You're righht on special skateboards, I have couple long distancne boards and they special brackets low to the ground with larger wheels. Makes huge difference over standard skateboards or longboards.

Employment based (EB2) and i know many people who's process took similar ~1.5 year plus/minus couple month. Though that's been about 5 years ago, haven't kept up since going thru it myself. No RFEs/audits, they where not common back then at least.

that's only the case if company intentionally delays application process for green card, which usually takes 1.5 year (unless applicant is form the country that hit the per-country limit, like India). 1.5 year "guaranteed" retention is not that significant to deal with visas/GC. Companies that do intentionally delay the GC process, that's different story, they can stretch the application for many years and have leverage over H1B holder. But that's not FB.

From my own experience as student, having only final test matter, removes the motivation for doing work during the semester and only preping last month/weeks before the test. Which is not as good learning as putting work thru the whole semester. The earlier assignments/tests/projects are covering only chunks of materical, which students supposed to learn in incremetns as they progress thru semester. If student is getting Ds thru all incremental steps, they are not magically getting A at the final test.

EUC are good alternative to bicycles for commuting (or recreation). They're a bit heavy to carry, but can be rolled using handle like a travel bag with wheels.

Be aware of safety, helmet is must, many wear motorcycle gear. They are relatively easy to get started and go on very high speed. Look online for safety tips and crash videos to get a sense.

I started skateboarding last year (mid 30s) and it's been a blast.

Surprisingly (to me) its very diverse, very different board/styles that enable very different activities: skateboarding, longboarding, down hill, dancing, surfskating, long distance skateboarding, ...

I eventually settled on long distance skateboarding (LDP). Which is jokingly refered as "old man's skateboarding". You just roll on a board on bike paths. It slightly more effort than bicycle, but going for 10-20 miles is not a problem (if you can do it on a bike you can do it on skateboard). The board makes a big difference, you need specialized board for distance. The "pumping" technique is what got me hooked, enables going for very long stretches without having to push with your leg.

It's so much more convenient to carry skateboard to the bike path than a bicycle, no racks, you can fit more skateboards in a trunk than people in a car.

I've never been religious but for 30+ years I always considered myself christian. If asked on such survey, I'd answer with the church I used to go twice a year for Christmas and Easter. One day I watched Ricky Gervais give interview on Cobert show (who's religios). And geez those jokes made me realize I'm actually and atheist. Now I would answer with no affiliation. From my friends observation, many are on the same edge, where practically they are gone from church, but may still show up on survey. In such cases those membership rates are going to drop a lot and fast.

Employing a few citizens/green card holders, doesn't mean it's not about money - it just to satisfy regulations, so you can keep getting h1b's approved. Most of outsourcing companies now moved to having small offices in US. 5%-10% are employed in US, while the rest is outsources, such models with few employees onsite just helps to outsource more.

From my anecdotal experience, a lot of recent immigrants (legal or illegal doesn't matter) don't know English and it takes them time (some times many years) before the can work in English speaking environment. Naturally such groups of same ethnicity are formed, and typically are the only work option for new immigrants (who don't speak English). This also means they are paid less, as have limited job options.

I'm not sure if I understood correctly, that your dad's crew was mostly immigrants, why do you think it was like that? If pay was good and semi-skilled (easy to train), why mostly immigrants?

Well it all depends, how good professional is, how much time you spend and how much you care about details. From my experience comparing to the jobs my nieghbord/friend had done by contractors - I can do better :) Though they didn't hire expensive contractors, I'm sure there professional who can do much better. But as mentioned in other comments, for average contractor time matters and they don't pay attention as much as you can. So if you care about details a lot and can't/don't want to hire expensive contractors, better do yourself.

Painting is especially easy, if you screw up some spot, you can always return and repaint (worst case you'll have to do that couple times :)) Painting equipment is (relatively) cheep, you can cover floors with plastic covers/blue tape and don't worry about screwing floors/doors while you learn :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNagIA8sKY0 watch these videos and you'd be ready to start. Cutting wall/ceiling line by hand is not that hard (the video has a trick), there're also "helper tools" for cutting lines in home depot/lowes. One trick is that if you go with light color on walls, perfect line with white ceiling doesn't even matter, you won't notice small deviations anyway.

If have doubts in your own skills (I did), try starting with closets and bedrooms. Only then move to living rooms/kitchens. If you screw up closet or your bedroom - it's not that of big deal. Though if watch above video series, it's really hard to screw up too much.
