I was actually just reading about Kapton yesterday, and stumbled upon some info about its deterioration being hastened by heat. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapton#Characteristics

In our high school physics class in early 80s, the teacher didn't care for calculators, so you'd have to do your calculations by hand, or learn to use a slide rule. I learned to use a slide rule, along with a buddy. I don't remember others in the class using slide rules, but looking back now, I have a hard time believing everybody else used pencil & paper. So there were probably others.

I think that teacher didn't retire for another 20 years, so he may have had kids in the 21st century still learning to use slide rules for his class.

I checked with Kinesis sales, and they said they’ll be offering the PBT dyesub keycaps, for those of us who’d like to buy them for our old Advantage2 keyboards. No word yet on when they’ll be available though.

Would be nice to allow user to paste in arbitrary code text, to reflect more typical code they're used to seeing (and get it to display ligatures, if applicable). Or possibly allow user to specify a source file from GitHub/GitLab to display.

I had this experience, too, after tech reviewing quite a few books. I quickly got to the point where I didn't want to even look at the final product, because of all the pointed-out flaws that would still remain, and I'd know the book could have been so much better, except that some editor was in a rush, or lazy.

I'm a strong Java developer wanting to transition to Clojure. In 14 years as a senior Java developer, mentor, and team lead, I mastered many associated technology stacks. I am looking for an opportunity to do more functional programming, ideally in Clojure. Although I have not used Clojure professionally, I solved all 150 problems on the 4Clojure.com website, and am well on the way to proficiency. I worked the problems from the first two chapters of the classic SICP in both Clojure and Haskell, and am reading Clojure books (and a style guide) to learn good idiomatic Clojure.

Besides using Java in my job, I write a lot of JavaScript, and also automate routine tasks using scripts written in Perl, Ruby, Python, and shell scripts. As part of continually honing my skills, in my free time I experiment with many languages, including Lisp, Erlang, OCaml, Haskell, Scala, and Clojure. Also I have begun Android development in my free time, initially with Eclipse, but now Android Studio. I have Github repos with some Haskell examples, and have solved over 100 Project Euler problems using Haskell. I also maintain several FreeBSD ports and do technical reviews for O'Reilly. Currently I am doing a technical review of an upcoming Clojure book.

Amen. In the market for a new garbage disposal recently, I was looking at the top-of-the-line Insinkerator Evolution Excel model until I saw a note about the delay in power-up being due to "microprocessor initialization". Microprocessor in a garbage disposal?!?

Hmm, it makes you wonder if NSA help and parallel construction are in play here.

Well, their non-failsafe thermostat could let your house freeze and pipes burst, if it happens to fail when you are away. So now they're going to take another reliable basic home item and make it complicated and unreliable?

The failure stories I have heard convince me these are not fail-safe devices. If the thing shuts down in the winter and doesn't restart correctly, and you are away, you could come back to frozen/burst pipes. (Probably hasn't happened yet, but the failures have happened, so it's likely just a matter of time.)

So I would only use one of these paired with a conventional thermostat serving as a safety net, in case the Nest fails. But then I resent having to compensate for a manufacturer that cannot be bothered to build the failsafe into their own product in the first place.

In order for this to work, it would have to have some real teeth, i.e., spell out real jail time penalties for NSA staff if collection occurs beyond the cutoff date. Jail time for top staff, not just low-level scapegoats.

Also, eliminate their loophole -- spell out explicitly that any capture + storage of communications qualifies as collection, not that it requires a human to listen to qualify.

Alas, it will never happen.
