Certainly that's the case in crowded industries like personal electronics manufacturing, but there's plenty of room for companies with new technologies or new markets (e.g. DJI with drones or Magic Leap with VR Tech)

I'm surprised by the dearth of companies with manufactured products, especially since this is an international list. All I see are the 6 listed as "hardware" + SpaceX.

Edit: plus Trendy and Theranos and probably a few more from the other categories.

Uber and other companies (including Google) have been hiring a lot of robotics faculty as well as newly-minted PhDs. This is a good thing for robotics research.

There's generally a shortage of tenure-track jobs relative to the number of qualified PhDs, so when companies poach faculty, it improves everyone's career options. This is one of the reasons why CS PhDs have a much higher chance of getting good tenure-track faculty jobs than, say, physics PhDs.

Of course, when there's a faculty exodus it causes a temporary leadership vacuum--e.g. this has been the situation at Stanford for the last couple years, where most of the AI faculty has left to start companies. But most of the students at Stanford seem to do fine, and universities can usually fill the void in a few years and hire some new enthusiastic faculty.

True, but whether someone self-identifies as Jewish depends on exactly how you ask him. To compare the Jewish representation in the US population, college X, and college Y, it's important that the same definition was used.

Feynman (mentioned in Unz's article) famously objected to being labeled as a Jew or Jewish scientist, since he was unreligious and didn't like the speculations about race and ability.

I'm skeptical of the Jewish statistics, which are allegedly based on Hillel documents.

Is Harvard really 25% Jewish? Or is that the fraction of domestic students who have some (possibly small) Jewish ancestry?

And what's the source that Caltech is 5.5% Jewish? Could that mean 5.5% are actually practicing?

Did Hillel actually perform a serious survey/study in these schools, or are these numbers based on some student's guess?

Admittedly, I haven't looked through his citations and supporting material, which looks pretty extensive.

Julia is an extremely ambitious project -- more so than most other languages being developed now, due to the number of things they're trying to do, and the novelty of Julia relative to previous projects. I used Julia for a couple of toy projects, but I then started running into various odd bugs in the language and libraries, so I stopped using it.

It's great news for me that they're starting a company, and the core developers will have the opportunity to step up development as part of their livelihood. I hope they hire some full-time developers to iron out all of the kinks.

Not surprising to me. I've participated in admissions committees (for a graduate program) and hiring committees (for new faculty) at a top US STEM program, and women do get a significant boost. This preference is usually explicit -- to look for "diversity hires", and so forth.
