You know what the problem is with spotify and JRE. They not only host it, they push it. I cancelled my Spotify because EVERY SINGLE DAY I'd have to see that pathetic loosers face on my home screen.

This is not about 'free speech' or whatever, it is about a company pushing dangerous content with no way to say 'nah, I'd rather not'. They have zero respect for their users & zero respect for artists.

It is about funding further development. The first risc-v development boards costed >600$ for essentially something like a raspberry pi.

After working in dev, ops & devops roles for over 10 years, I just want to add this: Expertise and specialization is not a bad thing.

Sure, you can just chuck everything on a managed k8s solution, PaaS or whatever, but that does not mean you can build efficient application images; write correct and secure nginx configurations etc. Maybe you can rely on what the platform provides, but I've never seen a platform that is acctually usable in production without customization layers.

Anyway, my point is, it is ok to have specialists, like for Ops and tooling. I do not & will not expect a frontend developer to be able to write a efficient docker image or how to ensure assets are properly rolled over during deploys. It simply does not scale.

Firstly 'very mild annoyance' for you maybe, I'd rather eat bricks then watch the endless ads and popups. Now a good old advertisement, like you'd get in magazines, target based on context are fine. Even some TV commercials are fine, I'd rather not have 20 minute on the hour of them, but meh.

It's all the low effort, spammy targeted crap that is the problem imo.

And 'ads also help small businesses to grow' is bs if you ask me.

- online ads are largely for the big business as small business gets crowded out & out-spend on search terms etc.

- targeted ads do not contribute meaningfully to conversion if you look close enough. Conversion metrics are crap as they do not account for the huge selection bias involved.

- marketing in general contributes nothing to society, it is all busy-work that changes nothing but maybe moving some people around between brands. It is a zero-sum game where the everybody keeps spending more and more and more for less impact & the market as whole is not impacted.

- 70 to 90% of all clicks & impressions are by bots.

- Content creators get jack shit for advertisements, if you pay like 1$ a month for someone's patreon or whatever you are generating more revenue then watching a thousand ads.

And then there is all the nefarious uses of targeted advertising that follow from it...

I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but I think those are some pretty excellent interview questions.

The first one, it's exactly about the thing I find a lot of developers lack in: a fundamental understanding about computers and processing. I've had 'experienced' developers write algorithms where every intermediate value was written to a cache/disk only to pull it out on the next line. I feel asking some more fundamental questions can help weed ppl out.

Same with being able to look at a stack trace and see where it went wrong, how quickly are you able to hone in on a specific target. Crucial skill imo, and I've had sooooo many people at my desk -- 'it's not working' -- that did not even read the f'ing error message.

I dunno, my M1 with 8GB is not even really usong swap afer a month of uptime and heavy loads memory-wise (VM's mostly).

Based on other comments: try not using chrome. I don't and I have 0 issues iwht this.

I do not use Chrome and my windowserver is using 3GB after a month of uptime. I feel this is not a M1/Apple issue to be honest.
