I'm building a personal habit tracker, solely for my own use. It is intended to be pretty basic - just a html file, with data saved by vanilla JS in browser's local storage. Currently about 50% of the work is done by AI (Cursor).
After adding a couple of extra features and having a "finished" tracker, I will try re-implementing this tracker in React, Svelte, Vue, Preact and some others.
My goal for this project is twofold: to get familiar with these frameworks and to practice using AI as a personal tutor (leading my way and answering my questions).
I've tried learning React, Laravel, etc before, but I've used them to build a fresh project from scratch and I've always got stuck early on due to the lack of knowledge/understanding.
I hope that re-implementing something that I already know and understand fairly well would make my learning process much more effective.
"Create Account" button leads to /undefined, both in Chrome and Firefox.
I now know that in Italian I should say 'mi piacciono' to convey my liking of things (plural), e.g "mi piacciono i libri" means "I like books", as opposed to singular 'mi piace il libro' (I like the book).
When I refer to likes of multiple people, e.g. "we like this book", I should use "ci piace il libro". Plural people speaking about liking plural books would be "ci piacciono i libri".
One of my goals for 2026 is to reach level B1 in Italian language.

It was not clear how to regulate the power of the hit until I've opened "Help". Maybe add some text under game field, "hold mouse button to set the power"?
Overall, nice little game, good work!
I do think that's where the field is at, because there is no fundamental laws
I think that there are some fundamental laws, which are based on perceptions and their interplay. Speaking very briefly, there are five classes of perceptions: emotions, wishes, thoughts, beliefs, and body sensations. The division of perceptions into these classes is not a result of purely intellectual exercise or idle theorizing. If one starts carefully and diligently observe contents of their mind, these contents will delaminate into such classes naturally. Try that yourself and you will see it as a fact.
Further introspection and assessment of arising perceptions would reveal some interesting patterns: there are two mutually incompatible kinds of emotions, and two mutually incompatible kinds of wishes, and so on.
One could make observations about the interplay of these perceptions and their dynamic. For example, if someone in some specific situation experiences an emotion X and a wish A (with some specific qualities), they can either realize that wish or choose not to do so. Each choice will lead to some changes in the contents of the mind: emotion X is replaced by emotion Y, and/or wish A is changed into wish B, and so on. Gather enough observations of that kind, and you could eventually formulate some hypotheses about possible general laws of perceptions (e.g. make a prediction that emotion X will change to emotion Y in specific set of circumstances).
These hypotheses could be verified by training several people to observe the same five classes of perceptions in the same manner. Arrange various test events for them, record their choices and outcomes of these choices (described in the same language of five classes of perceptions).
If most of them report more or less the same subjective outcomes (without being told about hypothesis and predictions, of course), that's the first step of verification for a possible general law of perceptions.
The second step of verification would be to apply brain imaging to those trained people, allowing us to map emotions X,Y,Z to some distinct patterns of the brain activity. After that do the same experiments with people who are untrained: arrange same test events for them while recording their brain activity. If changes in their brain patterns match for emotion X changed to emotion Y, that would be an objective confirmation of hypothesis formulated earlier.
Has anyone tried FocusMate or similar services? I have not used it myself but I think it may be useful to overcome procrastination. However, I doubt that having a random collaborators (a new one for each session) could do much for my motivation. I would prefer to keep collaborating with the same person for a longer period - a week or a month, to get better accountability

I have been maintaining various WordPress and WooCommerce sites/plugins for 7+ years. If you need a custom plugin, or some feature for your WordPress site, or tweaks in a WooCommerce store setup, I can do it for you. I'm also open for pure PHP coding!
There is also a project dedicated to saving the wisdom of earlier generations: https://savewisdom.org/the-1000-word-save-wisdom-questions/
I, too, strongly prefer having a personal desk. It is completely natural for a human to set up his environment according to their tastes and preferences, and I'm baffled that some office designers do not account for that.
Being terrified of aging and mortality is a sign of immature mind.
The earlier people start seriously think about their future decades and inevitable death, the better for them. Everyone has the change to prepare their body and mind for a long-lasting and fulfilling life (e.g. avoid unhealthy habits and nurture healthy ones).
Some philosophers maintain that properly cultivated awareness about one's future death is one of the main factors that help to grow as a person and to build a proper attitude to life's joys and sorrows.
Maybe these aging filters are net positive for humanity, as they nudge towards more conscious life style.
Has he shown any initiative to become more outgoing? And what would be his incentives for doing so?
It is possible that he sees his situation as perfectly fine and not in need of any correction. In that case any change in his behavior would be caused by pressure from others, and I am not sure this is a good outcome.
I am generally uneasy with all kinds of anatomy illustrations, sections and slices. I associate them with something painful (such as surgeries and various diseases). They also remind me about body impermanence and imperfection. E.g. a single blood clot stuck in some unfortunate place can lead to severe disability or death. Or, a brain needs just 5 minutes without oxygen supply to have irreparable damage. And so on.
That being said, I am slowly overcoming this aversion and anxiety by studying biology in general: cytology, genetics, biochemistry, and related fields of science. I'm fascinated by intricate complexities of a cell, and amazed by wonders of what is possible by combining various atoms in various configurations.
This sense of wonder gradually permeates my overall attitude towards organs and tissues. For example, instead of seeing a liver as an unsettling meaty blob, I perceive it as a complex mechanism which is constantly working to keep me alive and safe from poisons and toxins. Looking at a drop of blood, I can think about red cells, leukocytes and thrombocytes instead of associating blood with pain and body damage.
In other words, I'm starting to view cells and organs as something that truly deserves some kind of glory and admiration. There is an easily perceived kind of beauty in flowers, animals, or mountains. And another, hidden kind of beauty in cells, organs, bodies. It needs some work to be uncovered and become accessible.
"The Story of Earth: The First 4.5 Billion Years, from Stardust to Living Planet" by Robert M. Hazen has a chapter about genesis of elements ( big bang, star formation, supernovae, planet formation, etc).
here is a brief description of his system: https://genexxi.com/en/evolution-en/
I will use this definition of "happiness" in my reply: an emotional state arising from a way of life that is fulfilling, meaningful, makes the person fully satisfied but at the same time eager to explore, to set new exciting goals.
I know someone who has some unique qualities: this person is passionate but at the same time deeply analytical and profoundly sincere. E.g. he goes to the deepest possible degree of being honest with himself (by unflinchingly scrutinizing his beliefs, feelings, reactions), and does so in systematic, thorough way, gaining more and more understanding about how mind works.
This understanding allowed him to build his personal system of self-improvement (he describes it in several books which I don't link here because they are not translated yet into English), so he was able to rework himself into a truly happy person.
I've used some of his methods and I personally attest that they can be very effective if applied properly. But it is rather difficult to apply them! Because you have to be alike to the person who invented these methods: sincere, passionate, and persevering. Not everybody has these qualities.
I think that the key to the happiness is to be sincere, to strive for honesty. To know yourself and understand how your mind works, what it wants and why. Once a person truly understands themselves, they will be able to figure out their personal path to happiness. Which is unique for everyone.
This is brilliant! I was irritated by Booking.com nudges for a long time but I thought nothing could be done about it.
Now I want to build a similar extension. Leave a reply there if you know some site that badly needs de-stressing.
I recommend the book "Why we Sleep" by Matthew Walker [0]. It helped me to fix sleep schedule and better understand why good sleep is important

Yes, I've been following similar recipes and my sleep improved noticeably (after initial ~2 weeks or misery, when my body was getting accustomed to the new sleep schedule)
Russian language has an idiom similar to 点滴穿石 - "капля камень точит", literally "a drip grinds a stone", i.e. small but persistent effort eventually overpowers even the most hardy obstacles
This article is behind the paywall. What is the point of posting it on HN?
this article explains the concept of a market for lemons rather clearly. This kind of simple and thorough explanation for other economic phenomena would be rather valuable
it would be handy to automatically translate entered values into inches/centimeters when the corresponding option is selected in the dropdown
this post title talks about "year-long journey" but I don't see anything related to it in the post itself.
Eh, perfecting one's language use could be a journey - but what exactly would make this process an actual journey?
How do we distinguish between journey and non-journey?
I have been learning German ( via Duolingo) for the last two months. Does it count as a journey? So far it feels like a walk in a wood without a map.
This article says that the cause of mass sea stars death is still unknown. I don't see how we could help them to recover if we don't know that. Mass-grow them in some kind of sanctuary? There will be a risk that they all just die again when released into the wild (if the death factor is still present).
