Yeah I don't understand why people are acting so hurt by this. If you want to be paid for something, don't make it open source. If you want to force users to keep the source open, make it GPL/AGPL/whatever. If you want to prevent commercial use, use an appropriate license. This company didn't do any wrong from my limited knowledge of this thread.

Sure it would be great for them to give back, and they absolutely should, but I don't see why they deserve any hate (unless they hide what they did or engage in otherwise shady practices, but based on the comments I'm not seeing that).

Yeah, to use it effectively you use it for inspiration and generation of template code. The code may need a lot of changes or may need relatively few. But don't copy it expecting it to work without validating and testing it.

In this context Tribe is a federally recognized sovereign yet dependent nation. They have the ability to govern themselves but are still subject to federal law, but while on reservations they not subject to state law, only federal and tribal law. It's complicated.

AFAIK there are drug addicts all over the world, including in the Middle East and Philippines where drug addicts are met with severe punishments. The problem is IMO more the availability of drugs vs the potential punishments people face. People are willing to take risks to do drugs. Unless a government completely controls everyone's private life there remains an ability to evade detection and take drugs while telling oneself that one will not be caught.

Yeah sounds like the people who bought it suck. Why would you destroy a pizza oven? It would add a ton of value to the house for the right buyer. If you had sold it to me I would have absolutely kept the oven :) Also inspires me to follow a similar path for my house. I think the key is to price the house so only someone who values the work you've done would bother buying it, if you have the time to wait around. And I guess that doesn't guarantee anything.

Agreed, in the abstract the system is better if people and businesses are more protected from events that are out of their control.

The argument that the system should punish people for not risk averse enough to protect themselves against bank failures is like saying that languages with type checking are bad because they make soft programmers who can't protect themselves, even though the safer system is easier to use, and allows its users to focus on different, more important/business relevant problems.

Amazon is ok with internal competition, so this could just be a way of keeping options open while locking in a large customer. Maybe Stripe is better in some markets or verticals but Amazon will still rely on Amazon Payments for others. Long term there could still be a convergence on one or the other. No I was simply using strong language to suggest that I feel strongly about it. I'm not sure where to draw the line but as a concrete example, I'd consider voting for a law which created a large tax to fund biodiversity protection. Say 10% of income for high earners, or perhaps a corporate tax, etc etc. At the end of the day its almost an aesthetic decision, I'd like to live in a world with high biodiversity and where humans are well integrated with nature, where there's animal crossings over roads and all kinds of ridiculous things like that, and I'd be willing to pay for it with some non-trivial amount. Anyway, I'm commenting on hacker news, don't take me too seriously.

The value and worthiness is subjective, I'd support astronomical expenses and hardship humans to improve wildlife habitat because I think its important and care about it more than most other possible things to spend money on. The reason that makes sense to me is that we have no way of bringing extinct species back, and we are killing them off at record speed. The different life forms on our planet are absolutely amazing, why shouldn't we do everything in our power, for any cost, to replenish and improve habitat for them so they can survive for our descendants to see?

I'd rather focus on the environment and biodiversity, you can feel free to focus on humans.

Maybe she got nervous and her brain stopped working for a minute? Has happened to me when asked to explain something I've designed or code I've written at work and for some unknown reason I got flustered and once that happens it can take some time before I can remember things that I normally know very well. Could explain making a mistake that makes absolutely no sense, I could totally see myself doing it. (I also think some people don't have this issue as much and might not understand how it can happen).

My aunt is blind. Alexa is a game changer for her. She doesn't do a ton with it, but asking questions, getting news and weather, and accessing her audio book library are some things she uses it for. I hope amazon doesn't pull the plug completely, for her sake. Or, if they do, someone picks up where they left off with a focus on people with disabilities.

Anecdotal data for another factor: Too much effort is made! I've recently tried to make an effort to build up more of a friend network and turn some acquaintances into friends. I've noticed that we try to make everything so "nice" that it becomes inconvenient. The hosts always spend at least an hour getting their place ready and prepping food.

Most of my adult acquaintance friends are like this, but its nice to have a handful of friends that you've known for long enough where you don't feel bad just going to their house uninvited, without bringing anything and they will do the same to you. The problem is making these friends if you don't already have them, or turning the more polite acquaintance friendships into these. I imagine it will only happen after many years of effort. I've not created this type of friend in adulthood, only have kept around the ones I had when I was younger.

Oh man. Nikhil Kamath is a founder of Zerodha and I thought his name sounded familiar--he cheated in a celebrity chess simul against Vishy Anand [1]. It really bothered me when I heard about it at the time. Afterwards, he tried to play it off like everyone knew that he was getting help from a computer, which, in my opinion, was a really arrogant and unfortunate way of admitting to cheating.

I'd say that's more a problem with their incentives. When companies treat them like cannon fodder and cut them based on their monthly numbers, there's a huge incentive to do what it takes to make a sale. What's the worst that happens when you lie and make a sale? You get told not to do it again? Better than getting fired.
