"The vocal people in the community seem like they don't actually care about Bitcoin, but they want to see it succeed so that their "investment" makes a profit."

Im into Bitcoin, and I agree with this view. Most specially the reddit based bitcoin community.

He doesnt even need a copy of the wallet file.

If he stored the bitcoins in a single address, and he has the private key stashed somewhere, then even if the wallet file is deleted, it can be retrieved. This is how bitcoin works, if you have the ECDSA private key of a bitcoin address, you can spend those bitcoins without having the need for a wallet :)

I'd have to disagree with you on citing a paralellism between this case and "Pirate Bay vs Sony etc". As there's quite a huge difference between hosting the copyrighted content yourself, and pointing to where one can find copyrighted content. This has been the torrent stand ever since: that pointing to content stolen or otherwise is no way violating any sane law.

And it's quite sad really how an insane US law, the DCMA, is being used to make link aggregators, search engines and the like bend over to media conglomerates.

Omitting to mention that he tried to sell them an app, and failing to mention the other party's offer of 100k. Just throws out any sympathy I have for Brian.

Clearly this is just mud-slinging and a good play at eliciting the developer and HN community's tendency to white-knight oppressed "davids" without hearing both sides of the story.
