Paul Sellers has a book about hand tools. I haven't read it personally but I've watched the majority of his youtube videos. He is an excellent teacher and a joy to watch work.

You will work as part of the development team to create a hybrid advice platform for use within Worldsource Wealth Management. The team will leverage ModernAdvisor’s existing robo advice proprietary technology to create a new robo advise platform directly for Worldsource. You will be involved in the initial design and development of systems that will integrate directly with downstream systems to provide functionality such as account onboarding and client updates.

The current ModernAdvisor tech stack is Ruby on Rails (v6) with an AngularJS front end and MySQL DB. Everything is hosted and run on AWS. We will be leveraging our existing platform to bring digital experiences to Worldsource Wealth Management. Some interesting technical challenges that will be worked on include moving away from a legacy AngularJS framework, scaling the existing system to handle an large increase in the number of clients, as well as supporting different backoffice processes under Worldsource including new third party system integrations.

Experience in Ruby on Rails is helpful but not required. If you are a good developer you can easily pick up whatever is needed to be successful.

All our developers are involved in taking features from ideation through design, development, testing, deployment and support. This provides a great way to expand your experience and be involved in the full development lifecycle. We ship to production multiple times a week. Generally all of our developers work on both front end and back end.

I would recommend just buying some sets that look interesting to you. There is such a huge variety in themes available these days.

I highly recommend the Saturn V rocket. Lots of fun to build and it’s pretty impressive once done.

Outside of a FAANG I doubt it. Maybe something stock trading related. Considering the income for most software engineers is very far from 350K even if that is the limit for how much you can make you are still doing a lot better than most ever will.

Just for reference here in Canada the average income for sofware developers is around 70k CAD which is maybe 55k USD.

What is it in particular that you find 'dreary' to think you have maxed out your earning potential doing the same type of job you are doing now? Do you enjoy doing what you are doing?

1. Yes and I did about a year ago. I think I'll find it hard if I have to go back to 5 days a week. It's really nice to have long weekends every week. I've time to work on other things and take days to go hiking or skiing. It makes the work week really fly by as well. Some downsides are having to catch up on everything you missed on your day off, so it can suck up time. Also it takes people a while to realize that this is a permanent thing and to stop inviting you to meetings on a Friday. I would highly recommend that you pick the same day every week and stick to that. I picked Fridays and marked my whole calendar as out of office that day. Otherwise its too hard for others to manage if you take a Monday off one week and a Thursday the next.

2. Yes. I did this too. Although technically I negotiated to reduce to a 32 hours week instead of a pay increase. But I have the option of going back to a 5 days week with a 20% pay increase. Software engineers generally earn pretty good wages so I'd prefer to have the time than the extra money.

Very true. Plenty of projects I've worked on have had immovable dates that suddenly become movable once you get close enough to them.

On the flipside though I do think a deadline is necessary for everybody involved, developers and managers alike. It really helps to limit feature creep. And it forces people to think about what they really want or need.

I’ve gotten plenty of requests like this:

‘we just need a rough estimate, we won’t hold you to it’.

‘Ok based on the 2 minute conversation we just had I think about 3 months’

‘What! That seems way too long’

Other times I’ve been asked for estimates on features even though there is a hard deadline due to some external factor. I really fail to see the point of estimating anything when there is already a decided upon end date. Anyway I usually point out that they will need to just put the features in order of importance and I’ll work down the list. And they should start thinking about what can be cut. This usually leads to protests of ‘we have already cut everything we can’. But I have to laugh as we get closer to the deadline that suddenly not every feature is as important as was originally thought and magically get cut.

One option, if you can afford it, is to try reducing the time you spend at your full time job.

Ask about reducing to four days a week instead of five. I've recently done this and I find having one dedicated day to spend on side projects is much easier than trying to find a few hours here and there.
