Yeah, all these victims are white. For years, people been treated far worse, their stories shared in social media but it never make it to mainstream media.

Sad but hopefully these stories will bring some positive changes in immigration system for everyone.

What I find fascinating is that people seeking their roots and historical family tree always stay within their religion.

Almost all Muslim Pakistanis and Christian Indians somehow trace their family tree back to Middle East during the time period of their prophets. Many times it is obvious that even if they have any middle eastern DNA, it is negligible compared to rest of it. Why not learn about your ancestors who were not of same religion as you.

And why stop at 1400 or 2000 years back. Why not trace it further back.

And in the west, with superiority complex of European culture, many serious Christians get absolutely confused when you tell them that it is amazing how a middle eastern religion took over the entire Europe and the west. Some people even deny that Christianity is middle eastern.

While dramatic, and sometimes necessary to set yourself on fire but most of the times your children will be better off if you push through the storm without burning yourself. They will suffer cold a little longer but watching your parent burn to death will scar them for life.

I have met a few people at work who feared jail time whenever there were rumors of restructuring or layoffs. Even with their tech salaries, they had no money leftover for emergency fund. People join wrong companies all the time and quit in less than a year. Same goes for companies, plenty of people get laid off during their first year. It sucks but it also gives us more liquid labor market where employees and employers know that they can get out of bad relationships easily. (And it usually favors employers)

One or two stints like that are not a problem. Nor is gap in resume should be an issue. (Yes some old school managers want perfect resume but many more understand that people now take time off to explore other interests, travel, start their own ventures etc)

The key is to keep switching teams. If you stay in same team for a long time, your manager will start pushing you for promotion, either because they like you and start feeling bad for you or maybe they are pressured by their higher ups.

Use them as opportunity to practice your interview skills. If this time they make an offer and you have another offer, use that to negotiate hire salaries. And if you decide to go with the other company, ghost this company.

The world is also moving away from American companies. Startups in the US will not grow as fast. European and Chinese markets beat American markets last year, so capital is moving out of the United States.

There are some inconsistencies between function names and some quirks. I haven’t used PHP for a while, so cannot recall exact issues. Based on other comments, it seems PHP has resolved many of these problems.

Indeed. For most projects, you want to start with a framework but that applies to almost all of the languages.

PHP is the fastest and cheapest way to get MVP out the door.

Sure there are fast ways to get MVPs out with other languages like Vercel for JavaScript etc. But that is not cheap. And sure you can get a pretty cheap VPS but setting it up for anything non-static websites is time consuming and has potential for errors.

With PHP, you can have your proof of concept out in public for almost free and almost immediately. And once it is working, why bother rewriting the app in a better language unless you run into some kind of limitation.

This shows the decline in Amazon's customer service. I had several Kindles starting with Kindle Keyboard. At that time, Amazon's service was beyond amazing.

At one point, I had some issue with one of the Kindle while it was past 1 year. Amazon sent overnighted new Kindle for free when I was just hoping they give me some troubleshooting steps.

I stopped using Kindle about 4-5 years ago mostly because of all the bad press especially around them removing purchased books. Now I mostly buy paper books. I also use BOOX e-ink tablet to borrow books from library or newspapers. (BOOX is not ideal but there is no other choice of e-ink tablets that can let you use 3rd party apps, sadly.)

A friend who had done same thing, decided to stop doing that. Instead he started an e-commerce store. Focused on market research, marketing, etc. After his first store took off, he created more stores. He doesn’t care about what he sells, he just cares about revenue.

He is making enough to quit his EM job. He plans to keep adding new stores in his portfolio.

Absolutely, it is sad that almost all human societies normalize violence while sex is a taboo. One explanation I have read is that violent societies wiped out non-violent societies and now we are stuck with it.

Only way to fight glorification of violence would be to be treat violence same way as how sex is treated and over centuries we may end up with more peaceful societies.

Childhood dreams change too. iirc, my earliest dreams were to be a photographer, scientist, explorer. My parents eventually convinced me into thinking that being a doctor is the only way to be successful and that was my dream most of my childhood.

Later in my early teen years, I was impressed by technology & business and wanted to do tech start up. My parents again convinced me to stay focused on medicine because I could earn enough from it and do my own business in my 40s.

And then I got into video games and wanted to make my own games. I started to learn some programming on my own and I was good at it. I was never good with biology and chemistry. Eventually I failed to get into medical school and did computer science.

My goal was to make games but I am doing pretty good as a backend-focused fullstack dev.

I worked at one place where we had to deal with a lot of off-hours on call issues. Our manager focused on quick resolution and never let it escalate past her. Most of the time she wanted us to simply reboot service or server. Never had time to find root cause.

It happened a lot affecting our personal lives significantly, waking up in the middle of night just to reboot/restart some service.

Over time, the whole team started ignoring on-call alerts, and worked real slow. Pretending that our internet was down or laptop is not booting up. Longer it took to resolve alerts, our automated systems would start sending alerts to higher up in the chain. Also it started to impact our SLA and other metrics.

Finally, they decided to allocate resources to fix and stabilize the system.
