I think it's really hard to compare. Salaries are much lower but quality of life (IMO) much higher. I worked at a few tech companies in France. Almost nobody worked outside of the standard work hours (9-6 with 1 hour for lunch). Most people at lunch together; often at a restaurant.

People didn't worry about 401Ks & IRA - it's expected the security system and standard pension from working is sufficient.

People didn't worry about saving for kids college - they are close to free; same for healthcare.

You have 6 weeks of vacation (one job I had gave 9 weeks); and it's normal to take 2-3 weeks off at a time. In the US, from my experience, people don't leave for more than a week, and most of the work they missed is waiting for them upon their return.

Has this been tested, or is it just an idea. I imagine it would have some very serious limitations. Perhaps it could tell if you are likely in the US or Europe, but I doubt could get much more granular than that.

I'll disagree with this take too. In cases where AI is comparable or only slightly better I'd agree many would prefer a human doing this task.

However when AI does a job better people will be fine with AI taking on the role. We are fine with computer controlled subway lines, dishwashers, and some even driverless cars. We are happy let machines do tasks if we're confident they will do them well.

I think that's coming soon when autocomplete will break in browsers. I love 1Password 7, but don't want to upgrade to 8 for a number of reasons (including reviews, monthly charges, having to trust the 1Password cloud - sorry that's just too enticing for a hacker)

I wish someone from the 1Password team would push to keep 1Password 7 in maintenance mode, without a subscription model. Just keep it working - I'd be happy to pay to keep it alive and kicking.

Omnifocus - like Things you want a TO DO app to store everything you need to get done sone you can stop worrying you will forget stuff. Although I use Omnifocus a LOT (everything feeds into it) I use Notion to plan my day (with links back to Omni)

Devonthink - store all your papers and find them easily.

Alfred - keyboard shortcuts, custom workflows, clipboard history...

Amazon Echo Clock - the best way I've found to set pomodoro timers (so I can see them, but they don't distract me)

Tools aside though, it's important to create habits. Omnifocus can be tricky to setup in a way that works for you. It takes time to be able to use tools effectively, so only by constantly using them and tweaking processes will you get a great result.

My system is connected to the internet - but it only transmits small amounts of data out for reporting. It shouldn't be hard to harden their code to prevent hacks. If the local software is just making outbound connections and talking (no inbound connections or listening) it would be a pretty tricky entry point for a hacker.

You could also connect it to a guest wifi network.

The data it provides is rather useful as you can see the efficiency of each panel - useful to know when they need a cleaning :)

btw, my panel disconnected from wifi for a month and nobody said anything.

If an app has been blocked from the app store because it doesn't have In-App purchases (it has its own credit card form), do we know how this judgement affects things?

It sounds like the app would be allowed to link to an external payment system, but it's not clear if a non-Apple in app payment system would be allowed.

It's also not clear to me if In-App purchases (through Apple) could be required for approval into the store? I assume Apple would still have the power to require use of their payment system.

I agree large companies tend to be more likely to fit the requirement but there are also some small companies in this space.

The company I work for, for example, has is small (50 people) but as it's been revenue positive from the start it knows to focus on the longterm win - you don't get that by burning out employees. (If you're a RoR dev... www.platphormcorp.com)

Here are a few tips: 1. Make sure to ask during an interview what office hours are like, and let the company know you're looking for a good balance. A good company will be honest about their expectations - in general nobody wants a bad fit when hiring.

2. It's your life, not the company's. If you told the company you want a good work life balance - start your day at 8 and end at 5pm consistently every day (or whatever the normal work hours are). Let people know those are your hours and that you have other commitments (i.e. a life to live). I've worked with a few people (in other companies) who are great at this - and they were amongst the performers. If your manager knows asking you to work late isn't an option they'll figure something out - that's a manager's job. If you work off hours regularly, a manager will ask you to do it again.

As for tech debt that's a trickier one. It never makes sense to get rid of all tech debt (imo). A tool that's working, that is not really important to the company's future, likely doesn't not need refactoring any time soon. Of course, if business critical software should be kept up-to-date.

A $1000 bonus is a wonderful x-mas gift. Why would a company attribute the gift to the government instead of simply saying "We're AT&T. We're awesome. Here's $1000" unless there was motivation to do so?

Unless you can answer that question you should be cynical.

Does the Alexa app have a recording of what triggered her?

The app used to be very good at displaying most, if not all, interactions with Alexa. I find now that sadly many interactions are now missing.

Little Snitch will warn you (ask permission) if a new process wants to connect to the internet. If the beacon can pass information through an browser process though, I expect most people have Little Snitch rules to allow their browser to send any traffic without warnings.

We have a pet policy at work. One dog at a time, it can't be a large dog, must be well behaved and... ... if anyone has a problem with the pet policy it may need to be canceled.

It's fun having dogs at work, but it's pretty sensible for a company to place its employees before their pets. Raise your concern - it's not unusual to be uncomfortable around animals.

If it's not a deathly fear though, I suggest trying to be open minded about it. Most of the dogs in our office pretty much sleep or stay near their owner 99% of the day. They only perk up when food is around or the UPS guy comes by ;)

Did you have face-time with the companies before the on campus interviews?

Companies I've worked for in the past have hired far less than 50% of the people they brought in for interviews. It's like a blind date, you know a little about the person, but there's still a lot of missing information so not getting the job is the norm, not the exception.

That said, asking for feedback on what you could improve might provide you with insight. Also, review your resumé, do you think the companies expected a competency you don't yet have?

Head-up, there are lots of big companies out there. Some, like Google, still have a lot of choice in hire, while others (Yahoo comes to mind) can't be quite as picky! :)

What kills me is the lack of transparency here. If Skype replaced the message for all parties with something like:

"Hey bud, try this link: [Link deleted - this link breaks our terms of server]"

I could at least argue their case (although I still don't want someone to censor my communications with my friends). However, deleting the full message without warning the sender is absurd. What if along with the questionable link I wrote something important.

But they're censoring dialog between two 'friends'. Email's a different beast since you don't need to whitelist the other party in order to receive communications.

I could see the argument if Skype thought the account had been hacked and was spewing out spam, but there is no reason for it to think that in this case.

Would you think this is okay if they did the same think on voice calls (when their auto-translation launches they could add this sort of censorship). Would it be okay for Skype to beep out words it thinks are spammy?
