I just realised the "download" icons aren't meant to be "similar icons"... they allow you to download the one above. Doh!

I've re-tried the "remove user" one but uploaded an SVG instead of a PNG (so technically the resolution is unlimited). Uploaded it both circled and not circled.

The first one (the arrow into the door) seems to have worked well for the first three 'similar icons'.

The second one (remove user) didn't work at all. Maybe because it is circled.

In both cases, half the similar icons are 'download' icons, and I can kind of see why for the first case but not at all for the second case.

I had the same experience recently with first-time founders on HN "Who's Hiring?" (Fat Lama). They expected 4 rounds of interviews and a tech test. Delusional.

70% through FB, 30% through email/password. This is for a consumer-facing mobile app.

Though just yesterday 2 people signing up said "I probably shouldn't use Facebook now" and referenced the Cambridge Analytica news.

This feels like the perfect timing for me to read this. I just quit my job on Sunday after 1.5 years of trying and failing to get on with the CEO. I'm not sure I want to stay in tech at all. I'd be interested in hearing other people's stories about changing careers entirely -- to sales (I'm not a people person but trying hard to learn the soft skills), to writing a TV show or movie (theatrics and drama are fun), to non-tech biz dev? Would love to hear people's stories and how they succeeded or failed to change career, and if they regretted it?

It's taken 8 years to realise it, but now I realise the tech startup culture is absolutely horrible and -- as they article says -- full of narcissists. If you don't realise how bad the culture is, I'd recommend introspecting a bit (wish I did this sooner).

When I read this line, it hit home. I've been in and out of NHS treatment for years for other (not anorexia) issues. I never ever want to rely on the NHS again. They failed me so much I now avoid having to interact with anyone in the medical field. I deliberately avoid going to my GP for anything. Mental health care in the UK is so bad that you really wouldn't believe without first-hand experience. It needs to be scrapped and started again. I don't want to rant here on Hacker News too much (almost never comment) but this hit a nerve and I'm angry just thinking about the mental health care the NHS pretends to provide.

1) Maybe mobile has a higher conversion rate and higher order value? Having a bad website would force people to mobile. Do you really think that Deliveroo's website is better, looking at these screenshots side-by-side? :)

2) I can't comment on reviews -- don't know if that's true or if it's the same with Deliveroo.

3) I just opened Deliveroo in Angel. First is a donut shop... second is Pret A Manger... third is a wine store... then LEON and then Itsu. First on HungryHouse (owned by Just-Eat) is YouMe Sushi, followed by a bunch of independents (none very special but still independent and better than Pret/LEON/Itsu!). First on Just-Eat is Burger King to be fair, but that is then followed by indepdenents. McDonalds is first on Uber Eats. So I think Just-Eat is already equaling Deliveroo/Uber. Also I do see their logo everywhere.

What makes you think Just-Eat ran out of steam "years ago"?

I see lots of Deliveroo bikes around where I live in the centre of London, but they are basically non-existant when I go to other towns and cities.

Also, Deliveroo started up-scale -- they can't go down to selling cheap Chinese takeaway food, because it will hurt their image.

Just-Eat started at the low-end and are now moving up-scale without hurting their image. And even then, plenty of people prefer low-end Chinese food (I sure do).

There definitely are credit ratings in the UK! Try taking out a new credit card or loan or even getting a phone on contract -- they will almost always run a credit report check.

Just Google "UK free credit report" -- there are websites like Noddle that will show you your report for free.

+1 for Argos. I've started using them wherever I can, after Amazon failed to deliver 3 orders this year. The first 2 orders were refunded, the third wasn't, because the package was signed for (but by someone with a completely different name, and they didn't record the house number it was delivered to). Emailed them many times. They won't even reply to the emails or call me now.
