Maybe the solution would be to not elect these people directly and instead have the parliament/city council elect these? That way a coalition can form organically. It's working quite nicely in most European countries.
That shouldn't be a insurmountable issue though. When I buy a house all the carpets come out and get replaced with wood floors and everything gets repainted. Otherwise it's just gross.
I just started learning R and am still in the phase of learning a new language where I feel insecure that I picked the tight language to learn. Can anyone say anything about how R relates to the examples we have seen here for Python and Julia? Also Julia seems yo be the new hotness in this space, is that right? Should I skip R and learn Julia instead?
Helping poor people is extremely hard. I am pretty confident that going to Mars is solvable by just throwing enough money at it. Solving poverty for more than a very breve period is much harder. There was an episode about the problems the Millenium Villages project was encountering (http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2014/01/nina_munk_on_po.htm...) and it just made clear how many problems there are to overcome that you just don't consider. I am not saying it's unsolvable, but it's harder than traveling to Mars or making a self driving car. So Elon is the safer bet.
The same thing happened to me in China when I tried to speak Mandarin. Fortunately, however, there were many people who couldn't switch to English because they didn't speak it.
Also brings up the question why they are so big and not competing? Maybe the deal should be rejected and investigated why they aren't competing for customers. They should be at each other's throats and not making nice nice!

Can we get a god damn amendment to the constitution that enforced net neutrality and prohibits ISPs from doing anything but being ISPs, already?! The net is part of the infrastructure of our country and needs to be neutral! Anyone who fucks with that should be charged with terrorism.
To me the solution is clear: tear down the shitty Victorians and build skyscrapers instead. It made me terribly upset to see that the new buildings in Mission Bay are only 5-6 stories. Nothing that gets build in SF should be under 30 stories. We need living space and lots of it, so that prices come down.
Well, I understand why the Russian government is doing this. I don't have much confidence in the Ruble and am pretty sure I am not the only one. So BTC might be a viable alternative. An alternative that the Russian government has no control over.

I wish we could amend the constitution that they are not allowed to do anything at all but sell bits to consumers. No selling of content, access to consumers, devices or ice cream or whatever other scheme they come up with. Their sole interest has to be selling more bits! If they even as much as think about doing anything else there need to bd draconian penalties. I would even argue that they are endangering infrastructure and charge them with terrorism.

I actually like the idea of franchises becoming public domain. In many cases it seems that the holder either doesn't care about the IP (Sega properties like Skies of Arcadia, Landstalker or the Oasis series come to mind. Cap com has a bunch too) or they seem least competent in furthering the franchise (George Lucas, Square and now EA with Dungeon Keeper).
Regardless who is in the right here, I don't understand why all the protesters keep going to that square where all the cops are. One of those Molotov cocktails they keep throwing could probably be used more efficiently anywhere else in the city with so many cops in that one square. I am sure there must be plenty of worthwhile targets that pretty much have their pants down right now. Police stations, buildings associated with Yanukovich and his party... I am sure there is any number of places where a few guys with molotovs could be used better than at that battlefield of a square.

In fact institutions should never carry the blame alone. In every case may it be police officers or company employees, the actual people who did something should always be prosecuted as well. Institutions eating up all the punishment and individuals getting away is ruining the legal system and our society. But companies are people...
I actually was faced with the same problem a little while ago. I started making my own Greek yoghurt once a week at home. So I started having to throw out these big amounts of whey. That felt very wasteful, so I started to do some research into what I could do with the whey. It turns out to be a great substitute in many recipes that call for buttermilk (pancakes, mashed potatoes). It also is great in smoothies. Apparently you can even make ricotta cheese from it. Last weekend I actually still had enough yoghurt, but made yoghurt because I was out of whey! It's great stuff and I haven't even been able yet to make any ricotta, since I don't have enough left after all the other now mandatory use cases. I am really surprised that the whey is so acidic. Mine at least doesn't taste that sour. I would like some explanation for that. However, cultures used by these big corporations also aren't real, sustainable greek yoghurt cultures. You can use the culture from commercial yoghurt as a starter for your own yoghurt and go from there. However, the culture will die eventually, since they are bred for maximum consistent result in a laboratory like environment. I wonder if that has to do with it.
The topic of fermentation is super interesting. I can throng lay recommend to everyone o read Sandor Katz's "Art of Fermentation". It's a great work about the history, culture and basic workings of fermentation.
I agree. Frontier has a fiber and a DSL offering. Seeing both mixed together (I can just guess that that is what is oing on) is pretty useless.
I recently updated my PC that I only use for gaming. Since my MacBook Air that I work on is getting a little slow I thought it would be time to give Ubuntu another shot on my PC. Well, installing Ubuntu from a USB stick didn't only give mr a black screen, no it also broke my screen's firmware! How is that even possible? I got it fixed from OS X, tried installing Ubuntu again and it has the same result. Ubuntu wasn't even installed yet an already broke everything!
As someone who uses Rubymind all day I have to agree with the speed issues. However, there are some optimizations that can easily be made to make it less painful. Removing big files (like log files) from the project index is one thing. Removing unwanted plugins and turn off some inspections is another. I wish Rubymine had a wizard that walks new users through those optimizations.
I live in the US since five years and I never understood that zoning obsession. Can anyone explain why that's so different than it is in Europe for example? I really don't understand what the issue with mixed use is from an American perspective.
It's not only the use of antibiotics for livestock. In Russian prisons for example TB is a big problem, but there isn't enough money to give every patient the full antibiotic treatment. This results in a patient getting antibiotics for a few days and then the treatment stops before the TB is fully healed. Those are ideal conditions for TB to become resistant against antibiotics. I am sure similar things are happening elsewhere where there is a lack of funding. I am also pretty sure tat so e patients think they are cured and decide to stop treatment premarturly, resulting in the same problem. I don't think it's ironic at all. Big corporations spend more on lobbying and only want a free marked where it helps them. Big corporations are the biggest threat to a functioning and free market.
It's expensive because the journals are leaches sucking money and IP out of the system. The research was funded by the people, so why should the journals get the rights? The same institutions that are paying big bugs are also the ones contributing all the content. All the reviewing is even done by researchers who end up paying for the journal and contribut to it. It's sickening how the scientific community and the public at large get exploited by those leaches!
It still wouldn't make sense. The whole time system comenly in use is just a big ball of garbage. 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes per hour and 60 seconds per minute??? Are you kidding me?! What inconsistent collection of rubbish ist that? 60 and 12? Why not 13 and 79? Why 12 month with an arbitrary number of days per month? Kids every day waste hours of their life learning this random system while they could be using that time to learn something else for no reason. We could at least fix the days/month situation by January to May having 31 days and all the other month having 30 days. Why doesn't the day just have 10000 units and 5000 is noon? Ideally it's noon in one particular place, unrelated to the location of the user.
Of course this is sadly never gonna happen, like we never gonna get UTC, because the majority of people never have to deal with computers and/or people in other countries. As a expad and programmer I of course get annoyed by this almost every day...
I wish you couldn't sue anyone for anything they say or any information they distribute. May it be a bullshit opinion or nuclear launch codes. Free speech is under attack enough. To get the best form both fixtures and factories, I can strongly recommend http://github.com/rdy/fixture_builder It utilizes factories to build up your fixtures. This way you only need to specify what you actually care about in you r fixture which preserves readability. But you still get the speed of fixtures. The one downside is that you can never assume a complete knowledge of what's in your DB. This might break test for scopes for example.
However I more and more agree with the general notion that your unit test should not hit the DB. However, Rails works against that. Avdi Grimm's "Object's on Rails" (http://objectsonrails.com/) has some interesting suggestions on how to get some good test isolation out of Rails.
