I wonder when we’ll reach diminishing returns on new AI models. Haven’t tried Mythos or Fable yet but it seems like Anthropic is already priming itself for this by calling for a “slowdown” of AI development.

Equality is more expensive. It’s much easier to just cut advanced classes and shove the upper percentile students closer to the average in the name of having equal outcomes for all races.

I’m wondering the same. I’ve read multiple articles about formal methods and how they’ve been used to find obscure bugs in distributed systems, but usually they just show a proof and talk about formal methods without concrete examples.

The problem with dating apps is they turn to shit when it’s time for the platform to monetize.

Historically, console makers have taken a loss on consoles they sell and they primarily make money on the games themselves. I wonder how much Microsoft actually cares about console sales.

This is nearly identical to the massive issues with retail and car theft that we have in San Francisco.

With containerization it’s very quick to spin up test dependencies as well as part of your CICD. Why mock calls to a datastore when it’s super easy to spin up an ephemeral postgresql instance to test on?

Seattle became a tech city because of Microsoft and Amazon, period. If they didn’t decide to have their HQ there, we probably wouldn’t consider it a tech city.

Each engineer gets paid something around 200k-500k all in depending on seniority. I doubt just 1 team worked on this product given the bureaucracy of big tech companies like google. So why shell out millions of dollars in salary per year when the product isn’t making money?

Yep, we haven’t been allowed to hire anyone new on my team in a year. Definitely no headcount for junior engineers. With the cost of licenses for SaaS apps for a single developer my company would rather hire one senior engineer versus 2 juniors.

Managing IAM is a pain in the ass on AWS. I can’t speak to how much this product actually helps with that, but I would assume that that’s the problem they’re trying to solve.

You join a startup in hopes of it getting acquired or going public some day. Fig was never going to go public so if I worked there I’d be happy about the acquisition assuming that I wasn’t stiffed on my stock options when joining.

No it is not for a normal well adjusted person.

They need to update the minimum salary for H1B. There is no reason to bring in a QA engineer making 50k per year who tolerates poor working conditions due to lack of better options. I think that 100k would make more sense, and it arguably should be higher if the country wants to keep fulfilling the original goals of H1B.

It’s all just a race to the bottom in the name of “equality”. Everyone with the means to do so is moving out of SF because of the terrible schools, and the kids suffering the most as a result are from poorer families.

You wouldn’t even need to raise taxes to improve some of these programs. Just stop spending such an absurd amount of money on the military.

Yep, the cost to run these programs is more than it would be to have a 20k UBI given how to each person living in poverty.

I think it boils down to how old you were when the subprime mortgage meltdown happened in 2008, and how much your parents were affected by it. I wasn’t in the workforce until 2014 but seeing my parents and others struggle left an impression on me for sure.

It's NIMBYism. Most people in a state like California will agree that more affordable housing needs to be built, but no one wants it in their back yard.

Before introducing levels Netflix paid up to 550k in cash to people with the title of "senior software engineer". My title could be "dumbest person in the world" and I'd be happy with it if I were paid that much.
