“RF Mapping” or open sourced SIGINT? So many issues here. The IC at least has to abide by the constitution (fourth admenment, hello?). What does HE360 have to abide by? Entire company is full of ex-IC contractors and government employees. So.. they’ve essentially taken government tech and now trying to resell it to them? Surprised there isn’t more outrage. These guys will get hacked and a country with no SIGINT program will suddenly have access to an entire constellation. Nice.

The cost of takeaway/delivery has gotten absurd. I was looking at my deliveroo account the other day (UKs door dash) which has my order history all the way back to 2018. The drop-off in my usage and the increase in price post-Covid is interesting to look at. The nice thing about being in the UK is I can save myself a few bucks and just walk down the street to pick up the food myself. To be honest though, prices are so ridiculous I don’t even bother doing that anymore. It’s significantly cheaper to just do it myself (and I find myself eating healthier).

Highly recommend learning how to cook. There are a lot of easy dishes out there that you can throw in a crock-pot or oven with almost no prep, the trick is all in the spices. Chicken, pasta (with lean ground turkey!), salmon.. all low maintenance. Get yourself a steamer/rice cooker and most of the “cooking” is just waiting for your timers to go off.

Glad to see pydantic get mentioned here. It’s a great solution for this exact problem. I was introduced to it by FastAPI and have been using it in all my projects since.

At the end of the day you really can’t escape typing. It just makes life easier. We should stop letting languages try to remove it.

As an expat currently in the UK - my electric tariff is about to go from .18p per kWh to .36p. Gas is doubling as well. Most homes here have awful insulation, so I’ll be looking at 230gbp a month for my little two bedroom apartment. It’s crazy out here.

The reporters are asking tough (but correct) questions. The government is also doing its diligence to protect sources and methods. The thing to remember, though, the point of releasing this information is probably to prevent Russia from using this method. It would be pretty ironic if the US government releases this information.. and then a few days later such a video is released. Time will tell.

This is surreal. I’m a US expat living/working in the UK. Mostly disconnected from US media. Those of you living in LA… is it really this bad?

I was always of the impression that short low-quality comments that don’t further the discussion are prime examples of acceptable downvote targets here. Disagreeing with a constructively expressed idea is best done by expressing your own argument in a reply.

The political posts on here are amazing though. You get well thought out arguments from both sides. The only downside is the down voting/silencing of people’s opinions when the masses at HN don’t agree. The down vote feature should be disabled, let the responses/post chain do the judging.

One of the reasons I tend to lurk more than post. It’s disappointing to throw out an opinion and get attacked for it. I’m fine if you disagree (and I look forward to it) but it seems like some are conditioned to be offended by others opinions… or maybe paid? :)

It’s always more convenient to blame the messenger. There is a serious lack of responsibility placed on the users of Facebook. Maybe the world would be a better place if everyone had to read the Allegory of the Cave.

Expat living in the UK here.

One of the first things I had trouble finding here was good pizza. I tried everything in the town I live in and couldn’t find something to satisfy the craving (I even resorted to Pizza Hut and Papa John’s just hoping for a little bit of America). I ended up finding a refrigerated (not frozen) pizza in waitrose (grocery store) and I fell in love. Seriously, it’s relatively healthy and absolutely delicious. Whenever I have a pizza urge I walk up to my local waitrose to get one. Well, in the last 2-3 months I haven’t been able to get my hands on one. Every time I go in the pizza section has less in it and never has the one I want. I’ve tried going different days and times. At first I thought I was unlucky, but I’m noticing it more (especially with minced Turkey). Can’t help but think this is related.

Also…I also live out in the Dale’s… I’ve noticed farmers have a lot more cows than lambs. Which is strange. I haven’t seen a cow out here in the last 5 years, now they are EVERYWHERE. Slowly starting to put it all together and realize that these are probably effects of Brexit and covid. Hopefully it doesn’t get any worse than preventing a grumpy American from finding some good pizza and enjoying lambs frolicking in some pastures :)

How did we get to a point where we think it’s OK to tell someone what they should do with their body? For the record: I am vaccinated and I always encourage others to do so. But what is the difference between someone choosing to not vaccinate “because of their religion” and just choosing not to vaccinate? Why is one of those OK and the other isn’t?

Check out “eigenfaces.” It’s straight forward and works reasonably well. There are a lot of interesting applications of PCA and SVD. Signal and noise separation, machine learning, the list goes on.

And don’t even get me started on the format. How are we supposed to set an example for the world when our representatives won’t even let the CEOs of some of our most successful companies finish answering a question? What a waste of time.

Fiduciary duty is to the shareholders. There is a misconception that you are not a shareholder. Do you have a 401k? A pension? Any investments? Everyone benefits, even if you're only getting a few dollars from the dividend payment.

Rates are at historical lows, sitting on piles of cash is bad business. Those massive capital expenditure projects are as cheap as ever.. the point is to encourage spending when the economy is struggling. If you want to blame someone you should blame the fed for years of artificially lowered rates.

I appreciate your points. I should have re-read my post before I submitted. My intention wasn't to bash the public sector, but to try to point out some of the philosophical differences between the two.

Sure, but if his friends had to work 20-30% more then there is an obvious disconnect.

Individual A and B both make $200k a year. Individual A made that by giving an hour long speech. Individual B made that by working all year. On paper they are treated the same, but their reality is drastically different. You can't just tell person B "you don't need to work so much." They wouldn't be at the same level as person A without having done so.

Everyone is different. Some people are insanely smart. Incredibly efficient. Ridiculously productive. For every person out there that is making as much as you and working less there is also someone working more and making less. "We don't need to work so much" is a privilege, and in my personal opinion, is unrealistic.

To an extent isn’t this because these types of benefits aren’t affordable? The pension, extra vacation, etc wouldn’t be possible without the tax revenue raised from your friends who are working more hours.

In America there is a saying “good enough for government work.” I think a lot of public sector jobs get a bad rep because they hand out middle class lifestyles (arguably maybe even upper middle class in Washington DC metro area) at the expense of the private sector.

A lot of government employees (and contractors) just got paid to sit at home for 3-4 months during the pandemic if they worked in secure areas (can’t take classified information home). That’s a benefit that the private sector just can’t provide.

I guess I don’t really agree with the article. We need hard work, it’s what keeps the system going. We have it so much better than other parts of the world and we shouldn’t take that for granted.
