The scale of poverty is huge. With 1.2 billion, the number of poor and destitute will always be high. This is unfortunate but true.
I go to India a lot and do see people locking themselves in from reality. BUT, there are many more who do make an effort to improve the lives of the poor.
Anywho, India is India and will always be India. So if you don't like it, don't go there. If you live there and don't like it, leave. Otherwise, take it all in!

This applies to apps too. Here my simple logic.
Android phones are available for free from carriers. Thus, the typical Android buy is more price sensitive. They are more likely to choose free content & apps.
iPhone customers don't get FREE iPhones. They are willing to pay $200+ for a phone and contract. Their willingness to pay for apps & content is higher than Android users.
Just look at Angry Birds. It's FREE on the Android store, but charged for on the iOS store.
It's interesting how inventions from the early part of the 1900s are becoming more useful today. I remember reading an article which stated that engineers were re-discovering mathematical models from the early 1900s for use today.
The big concern I have is that we'll end up with more expensive hybrid cars and China will have the cost-effective stuff.
Facebook is not boring but I do think the Fan pages have way too many updates. They get in the way of updates from my friends.

I currently work at Japanese company in San Jose, but I don't see this type of behavior. The caveat is that I've only worked for a year here, so I may not be exposed yet.
I'd really like to know if Japanese society looks down on people who have embarrassed themselves. The executives must have a reason to prevent embarrassment and risk lives.

I'll probably open mine in Pleasanton or Dublin, CA. It is 30 miles NW of Silicon Valley, give or take a few miles. Here's why:
- Employees can get to these two cities using BART, 580, 680 or ACE trains. This allows me to make it easy for a diverse mix of employees to come work for me (tech, support, admin, mktng, research)
- Slightly lower COL. I don't know the exact number, but housing is a bit lower here than in San Jose/Santa Clara. It's generally a reverse commute.
- Same weather and cultural benefits that come with working in the Bay Area.
- Very low crime rate.
I spent a year or so networking heavily. I was a freelance developer hoping to meet businesses to work with.
I did not get the results I hope for. The networking events were parties not business events. People just stood around, drank and aired out.
My current conclusion, especially for freelancers, is to invest your earnings back into raising your profile. Write a blog, travel to customer sites.

We used Amazon and got bad performance in the beginning too. It is bad when you pull files out of S3. By bad I mean the latency is high.
We tried GoGrid and they lost or crashed our server instance.

I've been to Dubai. It's boring, very boring. The shops & malls are too expensive. The non-Arab "residents" are mostly people stealing from their homeland and splurging in Dubai. It's really sad.

Sleep rocks! I am in the 2.5% that sleep 8 hours or more. I am much more productive during the day as a result. I am alert, my brain spins faster and I can take on more challenges. My friend is a superstar scientist/M.D. and he sleeps 9 or more hours a day.
The "executives" who sleep < 7 hours need to fine a hour more. If I was a board member, I'd insist my C-level team sleep 8 hours!
The learning curve on git is high, but I understand the benefits. We use it at my current company , but we do make mistakes with it.
Windows + SVN is so easy to use (and so entrenched), I'd recommend to new developers & students to learn SVN.

WD stock is up today. IT seems like a great deal, WD can now sell more aggressively to businesses.
Businesses should use Groupon to bundle deals, not selling single items for deep discounts. This increases a businesses' volume and transaction costs go down per sale.
Video formats should be open and free to use/redistribute. Otherwise, startups can't get off the ground quickly (YouTube being the exception).
