A large part of it is the long term NIMBYism that has plagued the area.(driven by that wealth gap you mention) Bay Area is beautiful to live in, it makes sense why so many choose to settle there, but many people want to restrict that access or make it more difficult.

Compound that over time, and you get what SF is. (The same is happening in other cities like Seattle). It’s heartbreaking that for so long the systemic issues of these places went ignored. From my understanding there is change, but it’s only come once problems like homeless have reached a tipping point instead of the resident preemptively addressing it years/decades ago.

You did use “progressive slant” but for others reading this. That slant is just that. A slant. The city had the very opposite of progressive wins in last years city election cycle with quite a few moderates winning. It seems that slant might be wanting these days, our labor wins have seemed to run to the contrary though.

Drought has always been part of the American west. The distinction here is the frequency & intensity of # of drought days. Those are increasing due to us pumping GHG into our atmosphere.

The ecosystem in the west has adapted to drought, but they never adapted for a sudden increase in drought in only a few decades (not long enough for evolution to create useful adaptations on a large scale to speciate) + a competing species reducing total avail land and taking up water supply.

There isn’t, but that change is slow & constantly challenged. Any progress towards protecting the Earth, our environment, and our resources are extremely hard fought, sometimes poorly-implemented, or at risk of being revoked when the government changed hands.

It is difficult not to blame industry because they profit off continued pollution & resource exploitation. The markets have a larger short term incentive to maintain the status quo

This doesn’t track. No politician from either side wants to limit themselves out of a job.

I recently moved from a conservative state to a liberal one. The government at the former was far more controlling then my new home. I’ve never understood this argument. Conservatives are just as invested in intervening in our lives. See recent legislation limiting medical access, voting rights, environmental protections in the Southeastern US.

In my new home. I have better access to medical care, the outdoors are better funded, voting is simple and easy.

Both parties want control over the populace. The idea one party is advocating for more “liberty” is a reductive way of viewing politics

The Wii Fit Balance Board + Wii Fit games did this. I don’t think it saw wide stream appeal at the time, but I still use my Wii Fit occasionally to this day.

My partner works at an aquarium and the amount of personality that fish & marine animals have is incredible!

A lot of fish love sand/gravel baths. So when they spot a diver in the tank they’ll either look for food or wait for when to sprinkle sand/gravel overhead.

If you own an aquarium at home you can also begin to learn the personality of your tank critters. (I also define personality in animals as “different” from personality in humans. They are not equivalent, but individual animals still have unique behaviors that separate them from others in their species)

If you use Instagram, try and follow your local ZAA/AZA accredited aquarium or zoo. They often share clips of unique behavior & can often be pretty educational.

Youre right about the difficulty of the task, but should we even be considering 3 degrees of warming as acceptable? That’s a nightmare scenario for most of the global south

5 degrees is a nightmare scenario for the whole world. Albeit I think it’s far more likely if we have to finally admit we’re on the pathway to 3 degrees, many countries might independently deploy solar geoengineering projects to save their skin (especially island nations)

You don't need a absurdly high salary to raise a comfortable family or live a comfortable life.

Be careful with following that thinking trap. If you already think you're not making enough now, you'll fall down the rabbit hole of lifestyle creep where many high paying engineers struggle to get out of.

Enjoy your life, work isn't everything. Bay Area isn't that nice. You are likely able to live somewhere better (or can move somewhere nicer). I regret moving away from family & friends (albeit I do like the area I'm in now). Spend time with them.

You won't be worrying about your paycheck on your deathbed, but rather whether you lived a fulfilling life. I am certain more pay for less interesting work doesn't match that description ;)

I just grew tired of listening. Nothing specific. I was at a time in my life where I needed less distractions & it was easy to cut him out.

I did find him kind of repetitive at that point. He always made the same arguments, same stories, etc. Not much growth on his part.

I strongly dislike the trend of doomer climate articles providing the reader no information on how to act. We're facing the largest threat to humanity in history. One that requires large reforms to how we live our life to secure a comfortable & biodiverse world for future generations. (Notice: I didnt say liveable world, humans will still be around past 2100, but I rather have a world with less extreme heat, thanks. I would also like if my grandkids could ski too.)

I am involved in the climate movement, I know what to do, but imagine how hopeless an average reader might feel after seeing this headline. They might come to wrong conclusions such as "oh I better eat less fish!" No! Get your government to do something. Their carbon footprint is far greater then any one individual.

Feels like a moral wrong to throw this terryfying information on to a readers lap & provide them no ways to take action.

Read the article. Sadden he took such drastic actions & that it led to someone’s suffering for so many years until their eventual death, but he served his time in jail. Isn’t that how we repay criminal debts in society? Not a very good argument to deny anyone life saving care after they served their sentencing(or because for their past actions for that matter). If the family believed the sentencing wasn’t accurate that’s a different matter

The rapid rate of change induced by human caused warming still isn’t going be followed by a global cooling like D-O cycles. D-O cycles also occurred in a world that was still wild and not overdeveloped. The Earth’s biosphere was far more resilient back then. I don’t really see the point youre making? Was it just to disprove a statement I made?

While you correctly pointed out that human activity is contributing to climate change. You forgot to mention how unprecedented the rate at which the climate is changing. A process that normally takes tens of thousands of years is happening within a 3-4 human lifetimes. Far too quickly for organisms to adapt.

“Doom & gloom” is a defined differently to many people. What exactly do you mean here? Are humans going extinct & Earth is going to become uninhabitable? I certainly don’t think so.
