You have a point but as a kid I would definitely spend that much time reading (mostly novels but also newspapers).

I was definitely not present or available when reading.

I think this is all a very complex topic and the desire to find a clearcut simple answer is more damaging than helpful

Like with every drug it depends on set setting and dosage.

Personally I get very anxious if I smoke too much (and in the wrong setting); it helps me a lot with other issues if I only consume a small amount occasionally.

Also it matters a lot if I mix it with tobacco (then its a lot harder to consume responsibly).

So I think both you and GP have good points.

And yes its a million times better than alcohol, that stuff is literal poison for body and mind.

rules-based international order is mostly a propaganda term that the Us empire invented. It also was mostly "rules for thee but not for me"

Its a nice thing in theory but in practice power always overruled morals and I think the current US admin not only freely admits this but also kind of rubs your nose in it. In a way its less hypocritical than previously but also incredibly sobering for someone who grew up in a seemingly more "stable" world

I think its a very specific tech/HN bias.

I observe the complete opposite with some of my non-tech friends.

While we are sharing anecdotes and personal opinion:

I think most people don't care too much if its "AI" or not, they just want their problems solved...

I will never forgive them buying the rights to Utopia (UK) - probably the greatest show ever made - and remaking it into absolute shit. Just thinking about it makes my blood boil. Fuck Amazon (even if The Expanse was pretty good)

management values speed and quantity of delivery above all else

I don't know about you but this has been the case for my entire career. Mgmt never gave a shit about beautiful code or tech debt or maintainability or how enlightened I felt writing code.

I use a small local provider (posteo) and have 0 problems with spam.

So a 20 pound monkey can also throw around some weight. To be fair I only use it for personal stuff its probably different if you need enterprise scale l.
