I recently solved a 5-10 year bug in a similar vein. My local network DHCP shared an IP space with the VPN to which I have been connecting. This was causing intermittent and "unexplainable" connection issues that were ultimately due to plain old IP-address collisions.

Sadly, the immense joy that I felt upon resolution is mysteriously lacking from this person's post.

Edit: DHCP not DNS

How do you manage app updates?

I ask because I've been trying to make this system work for me, but find that the app update flow (partner unlocks phone -> update apps -> partner locks phone) always breaks and I end up with an unrestricted phone.

The fact that you can't allow updates while also not allowing installation of new apps is a huge blocker here for me.

One solution is to use Netflix's DVD service. In my experience it has the largest catalogue of any service and in many instances is the only way to legally view a movie without actually purchasing a copy.

It also switches from a passive "watch what is available" model to an active "watch what you have sought out" model.
