Your parents efforts, like many of the the good efforts to move humanity forward over many decades, have been thrown into the trash. The next generations of Americans will have social/educational gaps that CPB/PBS filled for educational, cultural, historical, and sociological reasons; not because they liked influencing little kids ideologically. And the future will suffer for it, as they say, if you don't learn it at home, society foots the bill to correct it.

May I add; the Democrats In Name Only(DINOs) of Manchin, Synema, and others? destroying the slight majorities Democrats seem to put together when ostensibly "in power"... They need to exert more control over the membership, as the Rs do. But I get the impression that the Ds take as many as they can't get, but only to get screwed over later.

True, but it does depend on your field. I was fortunate/unfortunate to have my feet in both over the years, and could not afford either early on, when I truly needed access.

In the past I wouldn't go to IEEE for IT and CS, except maybe, possibly for the physical level; that's the ACMs bailiwick. I had the distinct fortunate/unfortunate to be an absolute crossover, but could afford neither exsxcept when in pharma where they staffed their own libraries (from necessity), and paid for access.

Of course you do; and thats where a lot of the papers are locked up, behind IEEE/ACM/Science/Nature, other journals. I guess that's a huge reason to stay involved, if nothing more to access the different subgroups, both for journals and papers. There is often no other place, in my experience, to access that level of information and knowledge. And especially if you wish to publish, on the edge, yourself.

I'm truly interested in your thoughts... where would you discover truly hard problems? What do you feel would make you qualified to work on them, over, say someone else? enough to prove it to someone that could authorize such a salary and expenditure of time? Unless you were self-funded, of course. I've always wondered where and how would you discover what the edge of the knowledge and science actually is, and stay ahead of it? That is, to prevent reinventing the wheel and not to waste time? Just wondering as I've understood it by a lot of people over my career lifetime. Thank You.

agreed with your points... as a user of the current ath9k wireless problems, code changes to address security issues completely broke the wireless - for over two kernel releases until people alarmingly realized that noone was coming to help, code changers not even aware it was broken nor checked; that the interfaces were abstract, misunderstood, that even Linus broke in and said that such breakage, regression violated the system, and decided the patches be reverted. Point is, little to no documentation, and in my opinion too much fiat, with shallow testing and confirmation, and only when people howled was noticed. And this is the second time for me where I once spent days bisecting the kernel* over a year or two of changes, finally getting the chip manufacturers involved - ooops, sorry, was the response. *I realize that is my cost as a free OS user, but still, I'm not a developer and they shouldn't be pulling the rug out under us.

I use 1600 for main living, and 1200 in a nice "unfinished" poured wall walk out basement, with (insulated) concrete floor with no posts, as area for all storage, hobbies, crafts - kids roller skated, skateboarded, build forts, ping pong, foosball, TV, living room furniture, all winter long. I could even drive a car in. And it walks directly outside to an all sports freshwater lake. No additional taxes or insurance on 1200 b/c unfinished. You would not believe how inexpensive built new in the 2000s. People do make mistakes, in my opinion. Just watch how they buy motorhomes; same issue.

On page 89 in the book Marconi's remote controlled boat doesn't talk about the transmitter (that I saw), but used a coherer as a receiver detector, something like a primitive diode I think. But if so, they probably used a spark gap transmitter attached to a long wire antenna, but splattered energy across a huge electro spectrum and traveled very very far, quite disruptive to any other receiver on all different wavelengths. Marconi used one of these for the first transatlantic wireless test as I recall. I remember books used to show you how to build one from a model A automobile coil IIRC, but I don't think it would be long before the FCC would knock on your door and would not be happy as they would maybe have to triangulate your location from different states?. A real Ham can verify all this, but I loved to pore over the old magazines, electronics, being old enough to search it out in the junk piles that were quite common before the 1970s.

I don't disagree, but where I saw it begin was approx. +25 years ago when business started demanding degrees for jobs that had previously had no requirement, and for career advancement, as well as refusing on the job training. They would pay for expensive tuition and book benefits with no problem though. People began beating the doors down of colleges as this was the only way to enter many careers, or advance to the next level once there. Once this cascade started, the government wanted to make sure there was some kind of equal access to education, so funding had to be made available to allow the less privileged to attend, students or adults. Just my take on it.

But GDP(I) does in fact use taxes. I understand (grossly) that to make GDP(I) == GDP, you add taxes to GDP. Regardless, GDP can be modeled in several ways according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. If a government decides to not tax air, no economic activity. If they do, and a company sells you taxable air, there is economic activity. In the former case, it no money is required. In the latter, it generates economic activity, activity that cannot be swept under the rug and must be measured. It does matter, gov vs private industry.

Anything that is done at cost by the government is viewed by many as a lost potential profitable and taxable business; one that would drive up the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), a well used measure of an economy. Problem with using GDP, in my limited understanding, is that taxing things, even your breathing air, increases the GDP - I'd rather it not.

I disagree (I think); I recently went to the Henry Ford where it has been transformed into a "learning place", where they present a narrative, catering to strolling through, the ambiance (and restaurants). The Henry Ford used to be a collection of Things, of Harley-Davidsons, vacuum cleaners, and electron tubes, each of which had its own up close detail and story to tell, regardless of what comforts provided, the items themselves were the topic. Most of the items are now back in storage, now a pre-scripted narrative, making room for human comfort.
