They’re sort of similar, but also opposite. A convertor twists up the pen pulling ink into the chamber. A piston twists down the pen creating a vacuum first. When it gets to the bottom the vacuum is exposed to the nib and the ink is rapidly sucked up. I definitely find the piston less messy.

Now if you want to try a few different inks, do that next. Maybe get a second pen, see whether 'fine' or 'medium' sized nibs is more your thing.

What a pointless blog. “I don’t know why Thunderbolt exists. Here let me daisy chain PCIe and Thunderbolt devices to try and break it. Oh, it works, I must be cursed.”

So surprised I had to scroll too far for this reply. I actually work for one of the major US carriers. My job is literally to figure out how to apply the technical capabilities of 5G to solve business problems. NONE of the US carriers have figured out how to actually deliver network slicing beyond, say, reserving capacity for first responders. And, as you say, it’s about capacity, not speed per se. We want to make sure that, say, an AGV can offload kinematics to the MEC and navigate in real time in dynamic environments. The poster child for network slicing is the surgeon doing telesurgery over a 5G network (But that’s likely to remain a poster child). We’re figuring out how to provide network slices for autonomous vehicles, mobile teleoperation, etc., in all use cases we’re examining it because something BAD could happen absent guaranteed capacity. I have never ever heard anyone talk about using network slicing for QoS for consumer apps.

If the App Store is the only vehicle for selling mobile apps on Apple devices, then by virtue of their monopoly, they have a duty to be entirely transparent and fair. It’s entirely an Apple problem.

But instruction set, in practice and in this case, is tightly coupled with form factor and MIPS per watt. I work in mobile robotics: my low end choice is RPi, high end an NVIDIA board. While I can see Risc-V challenging ARM here, they don’t yet. (Excepting an ultra low power/low compute edge-case.) I just don’t see any CISC architecture that’s available today competing.

code-server works really well on the iPad. Make a web-app and you have VSCode as pretty much a full citizen. (Except of course you need a network connection and a remote system.) When I’m traveling light, this is an excellent solution. That said, no one should buy an iPad foremostly to code on.

When she dies, the next dominant male will change sex and assume the role. If that isn’t social I don’t know what is. (And that’s one example there are at least a dozen species of fish that can change sex due to external factors.)

I do admire Canada’s open mindedness. Anyone who completes an undergraduate degree in a Canadian university is eligible to apply for a work visa which rapidly leads to PR status. And, that converts to citizenship pretty quickly.

What is the state of compiler optimization for Apple Silicon under Linux? I’ll wager it’s far less mature than amd64. Indeed the whole point of Apple Silicon is its deep integration with macOS. These benchmarks are interesting, but of little practical value. No sane person should make system purchase decision solely based on this.

The ZX Spectrum manual reminds me of the time in the UK when you had to purchase a plug in addition to your electrical appliance. It was also the consumer’s responsibility to ensure the plug has the right fuse. (The plug you just bought probably had a 13 amp fuse fitted.)

I worked for EMC through the acquisition by Dell. I spoke with a someone in Dell MFG about their test process. In short, they test as configured by the customer. We were discussing a blade server. I asked what happens if a customer buys an additional blade and that slot on the backplane doesn’t work, because it wasn’t tested? The answer: we get them a new backplane really quickly. Dell is all about removing cost from the business and that means they made the calculation that it’s cheaper to test as configured and pay for the few cases where someone upgrades and has an issue, versus test everyone’s machine comprehensively. Needless to say, this wasn’t the EMC way. So yes, it’s expensive to overnight a new part to customers, but someone has done the ROI and figured out that is cheaper than testing every system for every anticipated problem.
