My political views aren't inline with majority of Hacker News members. Especially on issues relating to China, Russia, India and other countries that aren't allies of the United States. I will continue to read as a non-member.
It is mostly C# that is keeping Java on their toes. Java competes with C# than any other language in this world. In the enterprise space, it is either Java or C#. If you check most of their improvements, they were done ion C# first, then they follow.
They explain it here[1] on their discussion forum but still it doesn't make sense to me. If is a statement in every language I know and returns a value, but still those languages have ternary operator. I suspect they don't want to end up with a language similar to what we already have. They want to be different. Even when it isn't necessary.
Whenever I see an article comparing a market leader with an underdog, I always know that the article will be biased against the market leader. It is human nature to root for the underdog. What was the reason for not starting with variables II? I suspect the author wanted to manipulate our minds right there. It is obvious that Java version is the better of the two but they decided to start with a variable with final. Ternary operator for Kotlin doesn't look like ternary to me. It is just an inline if\else.
Did you just call Hacker News apolitical? I feel even Reddit is better when coming to political debates because on Reddit you can find a subreddit that aligns to your political ideology.
On HN, if you are from China, India, Russia, African country, the best thing you can do is to avoid articles about those geographical locations because comments will be mostly negative and any dissenting view will be downvoted until it becomes unreadable. It doesn’t matter if the view was free from strong language, it will be treated like it contains strong language.
At least on Reddit you can find a subreddit that aligns with your political and ideological views. Unlike here where you have to understand that your political views will be suppressed if it doesn’t align to the majority.
Every social network has a political agenda. If you don’t notice that agenda, know that it is because it aligns with your own political agenda.
These lists are so depressing. Is there any other career where people are expected to know 100 things just to be an employee at the bottom of the food chain? I won't be surprised if it is harder to be a Full Stack Developer than to be a CEO of a multi-national corporation. Looks like we are pushing everything to Developers. Developers of the future are going to need a fulltime pyschologist to cope with this ever increasing list of skills required from them.
In my country, landlines starts with certain code. So I simply ignore and block any number that starts with those code. I hate robocalls. I wish there was a way to reject all calls coming from numbers who aren't on my contact list.
They are indeed hurting their business for short term profits. Due to a number of robocalls I receive, I decided to ignore and block all calls from landline numbers. 99% of landline call I receive, are from robocalls these days. If someone wants to call me with a landline number, they must inform me first and I will store their number on my phone.
Surveillance is nothing new in South Africa. It is not even a secret. We have a regulation with a name that fully disclose that your communications can be intercepted. It is called RICA, which is short for Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act 70 of 2002 [1].
When you buy a new SIM card, you have to register it using your identification document and proof of residence. Every legally obtained SIM card is accountable. That way they wil know they are intercepting communication of the right person.
First I was programming in C and I was told C is bad and I must move to a better C -> C++. I listened and moved to C++. Then I was told C++ is horrible and I must switch to modern OOP langauges like Java and C#. I moved more than 15 years ago and I am now very productive when delivering solutions using C# and Java.
15 years later, I am now being told to dump my decade and a half knowledge and competitive advantage and learn a new programming paradigm? Miss me on this one. This time around, I will stick to what I know best. OOP has 80% of what I need and I know ways to deal with 20% of the problems. I will stick to it.
It took me only 2-3 days to learn F# but I feel I will be doing my clients a disservice if I have to start from scratch and start delivering solutions to their problems using a programming paradigm that I have little experience with.

I am glad I am not the only one who feel this way. Hacker News is a well-oiled pro-West propaganda machinery lately. Not sure if it is nationalism forcing people to be hostile towards China, Russia, India and anything not from the West.
I introduced a lot of people to HN, but they get turned off by these pro-West propaganda and leave. Such a turn off. I try to avoid news about China, Russia, India and anything from my beloved continent of Africa because I know comments will be mostly negative.
I am not a fan of echo chambers. I am forced to tolerate this echo chamber because of tech-related news. How I wish HN that can focus 100% on tech and related news. That was going to be awesome for people like me who don't like to be force-fed propaganda. Tech news is the only thing keeping me from quitting it altogether, but amount of propaganda being pushed to the front page will really push me to the edge.
