I like the rescramble idea. You could maybe go one step further by varying the difficulty of the rescrambling - I'm not sure if there's an established distance metric between rc states (something like a levenshtein distance, "minimum-number-of-changes-needed"), but the program could shuffle the cube out to some threshold on that metric to get easy, medium, hard, etc.

One major benefit of the sin/cos basis is that each basis function maps uniquely to a dirac delta in frequency space. This allows for power/energy symmetries between time and frequency domain representations of a signal and allows for more tenable frequency filtering, e.g. removing 60/50Hz noise or isolating a particular frequency band.

A haar wavelet or modified square wave basis may provide you with a simple orthonormal signal basis, but each wavelet has a frequency representation with infinite support in frequency space. This is (a) untenable and (b) eliminates the possibility of frequency-specific filtering. Wavelet analysis is more useful in specific cases.

24hr service would be very expensive, but it seems that they should run the transit services until a little after the majority of bars and clubs close. It was nice here in Boston when they ran the T until a little past 2AM; they've since pulled that back to 12:30 or so. It can be kind of a pain, but Uber/Lyft are well established here.

the evidence given in the article doesn't directly support this, but the author may have tried to get at the "[those that have] the necessary talent can learn any part of maths" statement you made. Without exposure to and engagement with a comprehensive education in mathematics (even just basic numeracy and arithmetic), it's incredibly difficult to teach oneself any given mathematical concept. Access to maths educational resources is ostensibly unrestricted, as (at least in the US) library cards are free of charge and the internet is readily accessible there; however, one can easily point at the many banes of lower-income households as immediate barriers to receiving any sort of education, either autodidactic in nature (i.e. sitting in a library with an geometry textbook) or through public schools.

It might be worth thinking in this "math for and from the elites" mindset when describing public aversion to the subject. Seeing it as beyond oneself or not relevant to one's life lends little towards anyone's desire to learn anything about it.

It's easy to say "why don't they just do it," with some diffuse definition of "they" in mind, but even the most basic things can be hard to get for the poor. A proper maths education is one of them, I think.

I think that it's good to pursue your interests, no matter how trivial (so long as they don't harm others, I suppose); however, it helps to work in a field paying you to do just that. Bell Labs was notorious for having a laissez-faire approach to managing its researchers.

So replenishing venom supplies may result in an increased metabolic load post-extraction, but that increase may not be so much when compared to another method of hunting. For example, it's probable that the heightened metabolic load associated with a python crushing/strangling its prey is a substantial increase from the animal's ~ergodic resting state.

Also, injections are probably not going to be clean and ideal. Having a toxin that does the job o(1000)-fold with a full delivery volume will still do the job with a tiny fraction of that in the event of a partial toxin delivery. This will still result in the death of the prey with a single, albeit flawed, attack.

QWERTY was laid out (at least partially) with the intent of preventing typewriter jams and increasing productivity. This was done by placing commonly paired letters far apart from one another; maybe this was also taken into account when designing each other language's keyboard. Letter pairs will differ, presumably, so the important keys to separate will change from language to language.

That's my intuition, anyways.

It's not the content of the book that this person is talking about, but rather their disdain for some constructed "people" for not reading. Not sure where the ire is coming from, but it's more of a "you're not wrong, you're just an asshole" comment.
