Has there been any analysis done on the firmware running on the various ICs in the Pixel phones?

Android app development just seems like such a hodgepodge of tools. Keeping Android SDK/NDK, Gradle, Kotlin, and Android Studio (plus all the associated plug-ins for each) working well is a full-time job.

Easily my favorite game of all time. Like many, my hardcore playing years were 1999-2004. Over the years I did drop into Project 1999^, and it’s always an amazingly fun bomb of nostalgia, but it falls short of the 99-04 era magic.

I’m worried about JetBrains too. From what I can tell, only a small portion of their team (including the founders) are located outside Russia. That’s a lot of people left inside Russia to be pressured, manipulated, and abused into compliance.

What an excellent post. LinkedIn seems to be getting worse and worse, merging in the worst aspects of the every-photo-is-staged "influencer" culture from Instagram and the stupid/not-inspirational/definitely-not-true meme story posts from Facebook. It really is so cringe.

This is a really good blog post, and a timely one for me. Our company is also taking this road less traveled and it's really not easy (not that building any business - VC backed or not - is easy!). My co-founder and I struggle with this decision constantly since this is no side hustle for us - we're in 100% and are paying for living expenses and businesses expenses with our own funds.

However, money is not the biggest issue because we saved and planned for this effort. It's exactly what was written "The Tradeoff" section that's the biggest difficulty with not working with VCs. We constantly see competitors and semi-competitors in our industry posting on LinkedIn about recent fund raising rounds, new contracts, acquisitions, etc. and every post seems to have 1000s of likes. Obviously it's not all due to VC support, but that community and network really does help (and is enticing).

It's funny... in my industry people seem to have forgotten that you can build a company without taking VC. It feels like our customer base equates small business with any new business even if that company has taken $250M of VC.

Do you have a recommendation for a good treadmill to go under a standing desk? This is a very interesting idea.

No, you should treat people like adults, set a deadline, and let them execute to that deadline. Many people balance multiple tasks, objectives, and goals and so taking 10 hours for a task that was assigned 10 hours is perfectly reasonable. If you keep planning 10 hour car rides and they continuously come in at 5 hours, you're bad at estimating.

Several bosses have explicitly told me they intentionally set an unrealistically aggressive delivery date because of the phenomenon of people taking as much as time as they're given.

Some people call this “phenomenon” planning against the deadline.

Flutter/Dart

Along these same lines - I'm looking to leave Dropbox. Has anyone used Tresorit or SpiderOak? I use it basically for cold storage - just a place to store images, files, etc. that I only access very, very rarely. I generally use iCloud for accessing images taken on my phone. The files I keep on Dropbox are just there as a redundant backup.

Feels like LinkedIn has gone down this road as well. It really doesn’t feel like a professional network any longer… too much attention seeking spam.

I don't know that I've ever been part of a "movement" until now. I joined the great resignation and went out into business for myself about four months ago. Just could not stand horrible management, HR, and weirdly empowered project managers at my megacorp any longer. Best decision I ever made.

Maybe it has better security, but it has worse privacy. Windows 10 is my last MS OS. Heading back to Linux as my daily driver with a System 76 machine.

This is sort of an aside, but I find it interesting that so many people’s threat models include the NSA/CIA. I see it all over the privacy-focused forums and subreddits I read. Don’t get me wrong - I believe privacy is a fundamental right and a carte blanche dragnet approach used by these agencies is not appropriate, but paying $10/mo for ProtonMail and ProtonVPN isn’t going to address that threat. That said, there is a balance between digital security/privacy and living a normal life. If you are truly trying to hide your online activities from those agencies, you are going to need to live a very specific lifestyle.

I’m more concerned about my privacy being utterly raped for advertising purposes. That’s why I use a paid VPN, paid privacy-focused DNS, paid ProtonMail account, use Signal, etc. I could probably be better served from self hosting some of these things, but this is a good balance for me. It seems to me that this concern - hiding data from Google, Microsoft, Verizon, etc. - is secondary to hiding from the NSA/CIA in many open privacy conversations.

Note - I am sympathetic to the fact that there are hostile governments all over the world and privacy-tooling is mandatory for whistle blowers, activists, protestors, journalists, etc.

The problem isn't that the IRS won't make a painless tool. The issue is that Intuit actively works to make sure the tax code stays as complicated as possible. Ideally the tax code is so simple that complicated tools aren't necessary for your average filer.
