Hyperlocal is the most awful buzzword I've ever seen. Out of all of them, ever.

I was just reading some "Hyperlocal" news in a paper printed often enough that I see a new one each time I pick up dinner from the same restaurant. Just because "The Observer" isn't online with ajax 5.7 pushed heavily by a startup into a first round blah blah blah

The market is tapped already and anyone who cares is already getting their news. No one younger than 55 gives a shit about hyperlocal.

If you can't make smalltalk with a girl then you can't make smalltalk with a guy either. Why does that matter, right? Well it isn't just girls you have a problem talking to. Chances are you're boring in general. And you obviously want to find a girl and a good way to find a girl is through her friends (both guy and gal).

If someone (guy or girl) asks what you're doing later tonight and the only answer you have is "Going to work on some code" then you are a boring person.

If you have no options in your lifestyle besides go home and sit at a computer you aren't going to be able to make smalltalk.

If you aren't going out this Thursday night to see a local band, or head to the park for some frisbee or soccer/football or volunteering to read children's books to kids at the library or really anything outside of your house what exactly do you think you're going to talk to these people about? The weather? Get some hobbies that you can share with other people. And pairs-programming does not count.

And a major point about majors. No one gives a flying fuck. Third month into freshman year every single person has been chatted up with "What's your major? oh that's cool, I'm a so-and-so". That's basically staple conversation to the point where you replay the conversation from memory rather than interacting with the person talking to you.

People who are "good" at smalltalk aren't making shit up on the spot. They go out and do things that they can talk about. Things other people do in a social setting. If you can only define yourself as a programmer you are a boring person.

This is far from true. "Holocaust deniers" very often turn out to be "The holocaust was more than just killing Jews, so stop making it just about them. A lot of the figures about those killed are inflated. The Holocaust needs to be stop being used a trump card for getting everything from Hate Speech Laws codified to a free pass for Israel to wall in the Palestinians and bomb densely populated areas."

Now I tacitly accept the figures for those killed in the Holocaust (6 million Jews, 5 million gypsies, gays and others) because it isn't an important issue for me.

But trying to call holocaust deniers closeted genocidal maniacs is pretty absurd.

And a lot of my friends list New York, NY as their city as well even though we live in NJ. Mostly people in theater or photography or some other vanity based work. I bet there are more than 2 million people listed as living in NY, NY too.

Every time this story comes up I'm shocked at the number of CS MIT grads there are on the internets. MIT must be graduating something like 50% of the total internet.

Also the comments on this story are always of the type "Well when I was in school things were taught right. The day I graduated it all started going downhill and now I wouldn't hire someone graduating from that school."

I agree. The sentimentalists are denying it. The idea that site operators have to be responsible for the live-feed user-content on their sites is absurd. Yes, this kid killed himself, but if I was the CEO of justin.tv I wouldn't feel bad for the kid. I'd feel bad for the tarnished name of my company. Honestly, people commit suicide ALL THE TIME. And it sucks.... for their friends and family, but suddenly it's broadcast across the internet and I'm supposed to have an interest in this specific incident?

But this story is a sensationalized love-in because other people witnessed the 'suicide'. I'm certainly not calling 9-1-1 every time I read a post trolling some web forums. 99% of the internet is NOT serious business. Most of the internet is people trying to piss each other off and cause trouble.

Honestly, the best this CEO can hope for is if people forget his company was involved, and worse case is the family ends up on Opera bemoaning how horrible the internet is and calling the CEO out to get involved in suicide prevention and better moderate his company's web properties.

The $31/hour is the wages paid to the employee. $73/hour is the cost to GM (healthcare, retirement, etc)

You missed some follow up information. The person who wrote the original post is the only salaried employee (barely above market average) and has no equity or options within the company. They are looking for someone to come on with a less than enticing salary, put their heart and soul into the project and be happy with the praise from the founders along with a smaller-than-should-be paycheck. Especially with the list of skills they want. They're basically asking for a gung-ho all-in hire who will get nothing more than a commemorative photo in a matte frame if the company takes off.

It isn't the money. It's the demands their listing puts on the new hire and the inadequate compensation they offer in return.

That's what I'm taking away from it. They put out a job listing for an employee, but are expecting that person to have the attitude of a partner.
