I think Elixir/Phoenix has to be the best stack currently for building applications with real-time features and that's all thanks to BEAM. Perhaps Go is another decent alternative but I definitely prefer BEAM's concurrency model.

Yes Rails is still a very good choice in 2025 and don't listen to anyone telling you it doesn't scale.

I think command line utilities are in a worse financial position than GUI utilities, because people are accustomed to paying for GUI apps, but aren’t accustomed to paying for things in the shell at all.

I think that's because command line tools are more appealing to technical people. For convenience sake and ease of use, most average computer users will use GUI tools or applications.

The story for Crystal is the same story for many programming languages: grow the interest of users, and find generous funding.

it's the same thing for Elixir as well. they have successfully wooed a few Ruby programmers but not many have completely switched to using Elixir. Again some companies using Elixir are those that want to migrate away from Ruby.

it takes quite a while for a new hot language to become extremely popular and then go on to replace other popular mainstream languages.

But maybe I'm doing it all wrong, and I should stop working on this to practice leetcode.

Junior here and not as experienced as you are but I resonate with a lot of what you have written so far. I'm more of let my work and projects speak for itself. I also hate leetcode or code challenge kinda interviews. So far I haven't have to take any to get a job and I plan on never taking or doing any. If I see that an interview involves such I will reject it. I can accept a decent take home assignment or technical questions in areas that I will likely encounter on the job.

How can there be apprenticeships when most companies are only looking for senior engineers? They are scared of training junior engineers because they feel that they will leave the company after a few years or even months. This is not always the case.

if going by what the writer wrote about the length of Aron Swartz incarceration is true, then that's way too much (35-year sentence). I mean he didn't kill someone even though what he did might be illegal. I just feel they just wanted to eliminate him. it's also totally unfair that he was erased from the history of reddit without good recognition for his work and contribution.

Don't multitask. Just do one thing at a time. To have full focus I turn off all notifications by setting my cellphone to do not disturb. Then I put on my headphones playing some cool background music without lyrics. The music helps me get in the zone most times. Essentially I don't multitask.

I'm here to learn and to keep up with latest happenings in the world of technology. I believe that there are many smart and intelligent people here doing great stuffs. Interacting with these people helps me to see things in different perspectives.

I will say it's more like statically typed Ruby. It has many frameworks for building web applications of which the most popular seems to be Amber.

Unfortunately it has a small community. For instance in my opinion one would rather build a web application using ruby than crystal. The only ruby-like language that has gained some level of success and popularity is elixir.

It's a growing and popular subreddit. It's a community where people that work remotely discuss on how to take on multiple jobs. A lot of their members are software engineers.

Yeah I do check that as well. There will be a post on that today.

Hi! I will definitely look at the twitter thread. I have been applying but haven't had any luck. I have gotten a few responses too but haven't landed any gig. I know it's a journey. Since you will be working with machine learning models then using Django web framework or any other python Web framework will be very good for your project. The merit of this is that python thrives well in machine learning and data science and there are many libraries available that you can use to do what you want.
