Beyond the models getting better; there are still huge gains available in the inference engine side with new tricks like Dflash, MRT, turboquant - for some usecases these can multiply the speeds. There are even some model specific optimized kernels like for DeepSeek 4 flash that seem wild.

Makes me feel we are nowhere near the optimum yet.

There might be a selection bias - off all the people who take that roundabout route; few achieve Jobs’ level of success. We never hear about them.

With MDM solutions you can not only get software update management, but even full LOM for models that support this. There are free and open source MDM out there.

There are even already some local AFM to Open AI API bridge project on GitHub - that lets you point basically any Open AI compatible client at the local models. Super nice for basic summarisation and completions.

I have an old iMac G3 from circa 2001 with classic Mac OS 9 on it for this purpose; there are great library websites out there with all educational games from the 90’s - no internet requirement in sight and loads of fun!

I can barely describe how foreign all of this is to a Dutch person. Pre-school and school drop-off is with a bike by default - Parents today use every type of cargo bike, but traditionally you’d see just a parent with two bike seats (on front, one rear) until the kids are 4 and able to bike themselves.

That might be a sign of excessive congestion on the channel used for Airplay. Esp with device to device direct link, latency should be minimal. If you can, try moving nearby AP’s off the AirPlay channels for your region. For the US: “If possible, avoid using Wi-Fi channels 149 and 153 in rooms where peer-to-peer AirPlay is frequently in use”

You’re on to something here - as a Dutch person, luke any of my friends, I have a ‘ daily driver’ bike with a in-hub set of gears, enclosed chain, drum brakes - and the thing is near indestructible. It spends its days in the street in front of my house chained to a bike rack ans still barely ever needs anything fixed. The typical ‘road bikes’ with derailleurs and rim brakes are fun when performance counts -but if you’re just getting around, who cares?

Thankful I learned to fix a flat tire at 5 and steadily built experience in bike repair since, from where my first moped and car repairs felt like basic extensions…

Your comment answers itself: it’s nothing inherent to macOS that needs AV scan - it’s the company policy, often driven by external compliance requirements and perhaps a lack of understanding - that leads to the outcome where multiple redundant AV mechanisms end up in your machine.
