I can’t understand how we got to this place with “app culture”

Nobody here is talking about the fact that a significant number of users want apps, too.

End users, for the most part don't know what they want. They take when makes sense to them. To end users apps are easy. To us, a URL is easy.

But the tech illiterati exist, and they love apps.

Yup!! And we get sucked into this vortex at times. Good post btw.

What is the use case?

I worked R&D on LoRa project a few years ago. Their use case was a long-range emergency communication system for workers in remote areas(no wifi, lte or LEO at that time). Now I see a bunch of applications in this field that aren't what you describe. :)

MacOS IMHO is no longer a viable OS for people like us(who know what this website even is). MacOS26 along with Windows11 are enshittifying and in some ways it's glorious to see. I do feel bad for non-IT people though, Linux is daunting to them...I get it.

Modern society totally devalues anything considered even slightly old.

Mild counterpoint. Our professions(all things IT) moves bloody fast.

If I were looking for info on cooking, baking, knitting sure... but IT stuff, I opine many of us seek the latest info because of the breakneck speeds this profession is known for.

I was curious how many people outside Canada have heard of this game. :)
