I second this, there's no right time and having children will be a pretty big shock to the system no matter how much you prepare yourself mentally or financially. I must say though if you could take day care out of the equation. Kids really don't cost that much in themselves unless you want to have the newest fanciest everything and designer clothes ha. If you want children don't put it off for the perfect time, there won't be one

I've made a conscious effort to let my 18 month old do this, even if it does mean the odd grazed knee or bump on the forehead I'd rather her learn from doing and making mistakes than wrap her in cotton wool, she gets more than enough wrapping with cotton wool from my wife :)

I think most people are both, I certainly notice it as a developer, times when my head is in the right place and my productivity goes through the roof and then the downtimes where it can be half that. I think it does tend to coincide with how busy you are, if you have too much time to think that's all you tend to do, over analysing tasks rather than just getting on with it.

The biggest problem with this is quiet often public transport is poor quality and expensive and bike lanes non existent. I'm lucky enough to cycle to work which takes 15 minutes, due to where I live taking a bus would mean doing a massive V across the city taking over an hour to a job I could walk to in 30/40 minutes, there is no incentive for me to use public transport at all and I see that mirrored a lot where I live. 10 mile journeys that would take hours by public transport but 20 minutes in a car, can I then judge people for driving, of course not.

This is a great point and I completely agree, as guff as the internet may have been 10/15 years ago I certainly enjoyed it more

I found the original post entirely depressing and sad. I could never imagine putting my own children through the level of stress that would cause them to do this. I am glad to read the fathers reaction in that last link

Good for him, I'd be surprised if he didn't end up back in the tech industry at some point in the future but the guy obviously needs a break/change of scene. Hope it works out for him

Great article, and a common sense approach to it at last. I can't believe this myth NK is behind it is being perpetuated when facts point to someone with insider knowledge and an agenda.

While I'm waiting for that, and still writing applications that have to support ancient versions of IE, I think I'll stick with Jquery. Can't wait for the future though

Bloody hell, that is horrible, do you mind me asking, if there were performance issues bad enough to pick up on in the first few weeks how were they not picked up on in the interview?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets this sometimes.

I can completely identify with some of the points made, my particular frustration is working with appalling specifications that are 9 times out of 10 incorrect/incomplete quiet often leading to features being written multiple times. It's demoralizing. I have no particular solution, some will say just knuckle down but it's easier said than done, there are some tasks that just can't be made interesting. Unlike the OP I can change job and am, next week.

Can't agree with that, Google Reader was great but I'm very happy with what I'm getting from Feedly, I don't feel worse off
