It’s literally what you experience in your life. I’d say I value my life a lot, in the end it’s all I actually own.

On the other hand, others value my attention because they can make fractions of a cent by making me look at stuff, because there’s a minimal chance they’ll convince me to spend money on stuff of probably little value.

Seems to me they don’t value my attention a lot, and I don’t get much of value out of it.

If you have anything even remotely important tied to your email address… then at least get your own domain name associated with it. It’s not a 100% guarantee that things won’t go wrong, but at least you can recover if your current digital feudal lord turns their ire on you.

To me, the killer feature has been the ability to filter out sites from my search results. I removed all of Pinterest, several tabloids and conspiracy sites, any obvious AI-generated sites that I run into, and just with that my search result quality has increased drastically.

It's a feature that I'd like other search engines to adopt natively.

Getting rid of most social media has been one of the best things I have ever done. I didn’t just delete my accounts, I also blocked the sites so I can’t visit them.

The best one to delete was definitely reddit. It’s too easy to doomscroll. It’s such a time sink, and being hyper-aware of everything that’s going on nowadays just made me anxious all the time.

HN hasn’t proven to be much of an issue for me. I guess it’s just less active, so I run out of new content faster whenever I visit.

As a broke college student, I had a great time playing on third-party servers. The experience was janky, of course, but it was hilarious. I made some good friends there.

Then I had to stop playing because it was eating into my study time too much.

I've tried going back to MMOs a couple of times since then, but nothing seems to have the charm of a smaller community like that.

Then just keep doing things the same way, but add a disclaimer that says you are only selling a license to play the game, and it's not guaranteed to work after a certain date.

I sync my devices to my Synology NAS at home, and then the NAS syncs them to Backblaze B2.

I have some extra workflows to back up some other data, like some WebDAV shares, based on rsync.

I’ve been gaming on Linux for quite a while, and it’s overall been a great experience.

I mean, at least until last week, when I bought myself a new top-of-the-line laptop. I’ve been distro-hopping trying to find something that works and everything failed in its own annoying way. Part of it is because I stubbornly decided to stick to Wayland because I really wanted to use my laptop’s HDR display to the fullest.

Nobara KDE had serious issues handling hybrid GPU mode. The SDR color profile of my built-in display got completely borked - worked fine in HDR or plugged in to a display. But then I had serious graphical artifacts when I plugged in my display with VRR disabled! They went away when I enabled VRR, but the flickering was really bad. All of this went away if I switched my laptop to dGPU mode, but grub stopped showing anything and I couldn’t reach the UEFI anymore unless I removed the SSD.

Next I tried Garuda Dragonized Gaming. The styling is atrocious IMO, but I really liked the OS management tools. Unfortunately I couldn’t get it to recognize the dGPU, so I moved on.

Next I tried Bazzite. I was very impressed by how well everything worked and performed! Atomic Linux made some of my regular setup more complicated, but the challenge was interesting. But then I decided to unplug it from my dock, and I discovered that the kernel was rebooting the built-in keyboard constantly, making it impossible to type anything.

I decided to go back to my go-to safe choice, Pop!_OS. Installation went smoothly as usual, I even followed a tutorial to use Btrfs which I really like. Everything worked great until I plugged in my monitor and the whole system started stuttering.

I decided to give up for now, I installed Windows again and applied Atlas OS to it to trim down the annoying stuff. After some tweaking I got the battery life to something that seems reasonable. Games work as expected, and I’m mostly done finding alternatives to some of my personal setup quirks.

I want to be clear: my switch to Windows is temporary until fixes for the issues I experienced start to surface. My laptop model is very recent, and I don’t have the know how or time to dig deeply into all of these issues. I’ll probably be sick of Windows in 6 months, ready for round 2.

Definitely my favorite phone ever was the Lumia 1020. I loved the OS, and I loved the phone itself with its focus on the camera.

Sadly, I was able to get it in 2015 and by then it was too late. I don’t think any phone since then has hooked me like that.

Hah, about a month ago I wrote a DLX solver for exact cover problems and LiQueens was one of my first implementations.

Absolutely off-topic, but I started browsing Snopes’ tracking consent options and they use an insane amount of vendors. It took me longer to scroll through the list than reading the article itself.

With all the recent developments in the US, I started doomscrolling reddit about a month ago. It’s clearly affected me emotionally.

Yesterday, I blocked it completely at home and partially at work - I might still need to read some posts from time to time, but I don’t want to be able to browse it.

It’s been a bit hard to come up with things to fill my time with again. Kinda scary.

They do talk about it in the end, briefly. Otherwise, it almost sounds like a sponsored article.

Something similar happened to me last year, except the thief was in a motorbike. It made me decide to buy a second, cheaper phone for traveling abroad.

I did have some fun with the situation. I immediately put my iPhone in lost mode, with the message “enjoy your paperweight”, and blocked the eSIM to make sure it was as useless as possible. For the next few months, I checked on it periodically to see where the phone was last seen and how it moved around town.

Eventually the phone stopped reporting its location. I assume the thief just gave up and threw it away or stashed it.

Always good to do some research before you buy though.

My current laptop, a 2024 Razer Blade 13 with an AMD processor, has a weird bug where the internal speakers won’t make a sound unless you run a series of hda-verb commands.

Easy fix once you know it, but it took me some time to find the solution.

TBH, this is something that scares me about Teslas. Most people can’t handle a car that accelerates that fast. Granted, I know they have safety features that prevent you from running over people… but safeguards fail, this is just a game we shouldn’t be playing at all.

On the track? Go crazy. Long stretches of road by yourself? It’s your life, just don’t crash and don’t get caught. Around other people, though?

Ah, I remember Chime from back in my Amazon days.

When they launched it and started migrating it internally, they didn’t have a Linux or web version. Back then, I was still using a Windows Phone (as much as the lack of available apps sucked, it had nice UI and worked well), so that wasn’t an option either.

I managed to get by by using the Android APK with a translation layer, I believe? Nevertheless, it was unstable and awful.

Eventually I caved in and switched back to Android and Mac, the Linux dev env was just unusable most of the time.

At work, I'm finalizing a platform to quickly set up and deploy Apache Flink clusters and pipelines. It's going surprisingly well, with several teams interested in using it! Unfortunately we couldn't use the extremely cool Flink Kubernetes Operator because it's incompatible with the existing infrastructure stack at my company... but rolling out something similar enough hasn't been too hard.

At home, I'm about to receive my new robot vacuum and the gear I need to install Valetudo in it. I'm excited because I've had nothing but bad experiences with cloud-connected vacuums. To give you all an example: my current Shark vacuum sometimes starts by itself in the middle of the night. When I get up to stop it and check the app, I see that the floor plan it tried to clean is not my house... so it's receiving cleaning commands from other users.

It'd be sufficient if a system involved somewhere in the process converted null values to strings. There's innumerable ways, but here's a simple one in Java:

Interesting… that’s been happening to me but because I’ve been playing a lot with my guitar tuned half-step down.

I hear a note that I associate with a chord in my guitar, and I have to remind myself that I need to compensate for it.

This literally just happened to me last week. I emailed them to ask them how to stop this:

With Proton’s catch-all and sieve filters, I’ve simplified my method to the following:

* Every company I interact with gets a different email alias (no tags - company@mydomain.com)

* Every company gets a category tag (Finances, Travel, Entertainment, etc)

* Every category gets a folder by importance (finances are Important, travel is Somewhat Important, Entertainment is Not Important), with different retention periods (forever, 1 year, 1 month)

It’s a simple model that only requires me to put my alias in one of the rules on first receipt.

For unwieldy senders, like Klaviyo (one of their users spammed me more-than-daily and their CS was of no use), I set up a reject sieve filter literally telling them to fuck off. The emails did stop after a while, I think they got the message.
